I saw a 40 gal BRD today. It was 36 long X 16 tall X 18 wide. Does the BRD stand for breeder? I absolutely loved the width on this thing, and especially how short it was. Does anyone see any disadvantages with a tank of these dimensions? I want to do a softy tank, mainly ricordia and zoos ( I LOVE this months TOTM!!!!)

Anybody have recommendations on where I should look for this thing?

As always, Thank You!

Donna

is it glass or acrylic?

Its was glass. I dont really want to deal with the scratch factor of acrylic.

Well, the most important thing with glass is the seals on the tank. better tanks will use a silicon adhesive over regular silicon. It will hold much better and and you don't get the silicon in the corners that build up algae that you can't get out. There are a couple of tanks out there that will actually put plastice stripping along the corners that hide the seals. Not a good thing. You also want to take a look at the thinkness of the glass. With a 40 gallon tank that isn't as big of a deal but you are going to at least look.

I like my 40g breeders (and yes, the deminsions are that of the 40g breeder). It's shallow so you can get away with less MH or even VHO if you are going just softy. Good depth (front to back) for aquascaping. :D

The glass brands (such as AGA) can have the back pane drilled if you want (and it really is a good idea).

FWIW my .02

I really like the look too, I cant wait to move my current tank over to one. How much should I be spending on one? I saw one the other day for $100, is that a reasonable price? It was AGA, but other than that, nothing special.0

Was it drilled at all? That is a little pricey for a tank that size..

I've bought lots of used tanks! nothing new though. Check the RJ classifieds, there's always a tank or two in there, you just gotta be patient.

Chris, Nope, the tank was not drilled. I figured it was a little pricy.

Jeff, what is the RJ classifieds, and where do I get it?

http://www.lasvegasnewspapers.com/lvclassifieds/index.jsp?display_day=0 it's under merchandise and misc. it's the local newspaper, review journal. theres a couple of tanks in there, a 54g corner reef for $600, and a 110g for $300.

Wow, if the 110g is in good shape (and glass) thats not a bad price. Knowing you can barter with them of course! :D

Yeah, not bad at all, but I dont have the room for a bigger tank like that, along with a 75 and a 40! I already drive my mom nuts with all my tank stuff.....maybe I need a fish room :D
