ok, so you've all been waiting for pictures, and i had a little extra time this morning so without any more delay, here is MY TANK!

but first, a little background- i got the tank alone for free with a black acrylic canopy, so the stand has been completely built from scratch, along with the sump (welded frame with glass/acrylic siliconed up on the inside), and the plumbing. This is my FIRST major tank, so i've made a lot of mistakes and learned a lot, but i think it has turned out pretty well so far. and please forgive me, my room is a horrible mess at the moment. This tank + training has left me 0 time to clean~ ok now you get pics =)

full tank shot:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/tankwcanopy.jpg
the tank is tiled in very very heavy natural tiles which makes lifting the canopy off a real pain in the ....i'm working on designing some sort of pully system to possibly lift the canopy up for feedings and such.

you guys saw the pictures of my rock a while back, and here it is in the tank:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/tank1.jpg
as you can see the algae is starting to build up...chris get more snails in!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/algae1.jpg

some really brilliant purplish corraline that the picture does little justice too. but unfortunatly there's little algae patches growing all in here too that you cant see.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/corraline.jpg

baby feather duster with nasty looking algae to his right (can anyone ID?)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/featherduster.jpg

and here's the return line beginning to form the nasty algae=(

ok so on to the hardware!

we take the top off to reveal the MOON LIGHT! (my fav part, but i cant figure out how to take good pictures when only the moonlight is on)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/tankwocanopy.jpg

closer shot of the top:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/moonlight.jpg
is there anyway to cut down on how much water accumulates on the top of the acrylic?

here's the inside of my canopy with a 2x55watt retrofit kit running 2x03 antics, 2x10k bulbs:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/canopy1.jpg

initially i was having a problem with the canopy getting wayyy too hot when the lights were on, so i came up with a cheap solution:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/fansandlights1.jpg

closer shots of the cooling system:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/dualfans.jpg

the fans blow OUT of the canopy, so it sucks cool air in from the front. So far its working very well, except for the salt creep on the fan blades! but hey, the fans cost me $2

their cheap wiring (couldnt locate soldering iron):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/fanwiring.jpg

and here's my cheap DIY topoff system that isnt working too well ATM, i cant seem to keep the water level even:

now we make our way down below~

as we head down the overflow:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/overflow.jpg

here is the sump design before it was implimented:
http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/41487sump12.jpg

so we come to the real, refugium!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/refugium1.jpg

remember this is all custom built to fit, after the stand was built, so it's very akward to work in.

closer shot of the refugium front wall:

the plumbing:

the skimmer hard at work:

looking good. The levels for your top off will just have to come in time. without an actually doser it is going to be a calibration game....

looking at your sump now. that is a long fall for the for the water into the pump chamber...that might be where you are getting your little mircobubbles from.

the Undone guy

the tank includes:

15lbs marshall islands LR
55lbs kelini tonga LR
4lbs LR rubble
15lbs Livesand (in fuge)
20lbs fine white sand
some cheatmorpha thx to jeff!

I have 2 baby Chromis and one Zebra Moray Eel as its livestock...and 2 snails:

turbo going at it:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/turbogoinatit.jpg

and can anyone ID this snail? he was a ride along with the LR, and he's quick as hell!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/tank%20showcase/snail.jpg

i cant get a decent shot of Mr. Eel because he has yet to show himself, except to try and eat my turbo snail...haha

Questions? Comments? thx for reading/looking guys!

the fall usually isn't that long chris, when the water level is right, the fall is maybe 1-2cm, if that.

And if you're talking about the fall from the refugium into the sump area, check out the 3D rendering of the sump above, water only goes over that wall in front of the skimmer.

looking good man, i really dig that stand & canopy. good idea.

is there anyway to cut down on how much water accumulates on the top of the acrylic?

if you run your tank cooler it might help. also replace that strip of acrylic with some egg crate. it'll still keep your eel from escaping and allow for better gas exchange. i assume you're getting water build up because the vapor can't escape.

Looks great

I love the stand!

I would ditch the acrylic top as well, eggcreate is a perfect replacement. You cut the oxygen/gas exchange when you have solid top like that. With the eel being a messy eater, it's good to have a lot of that. :D

the Undone guy

the only reason i have a solid top is because the lights are DIRECTLY above that opening, and i didnt think i wanted salt creep on my hot PC's

opihi

if you're saying what i think you're saying, you might not want to have the fixture sitting on top of the acrylic top. they can get hot enough to warp the acrylic

the Undone guy
07/29/2004, 12:58 AM
yea the acrylic lid thing is already warped a bit, no big deal. warped or not the salt creep cant creep through~

opihi
07/29/2004, 01:44 AM
why don't you just mount it into your canopy? you should really replace that acrylic cover with egg crate. you're limiting gas exchange.

the Undone guy
07/29/2004, 01:56 AM
i dont think im being clear...

the lights are mounted in the canopy. when the canopy is on the tank, the lights are directly above the opening on the acrylic tank. therefore, to reduce salt creep and water resedue on the lightbulbs themselves i put that cheap peice of warped acrylic over the opening in the top of the tank.

i finally got a shot of the most important inhabitant:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v321/mons00n/fish/mreel1.jpg

its difficult getting a shot of the guy when only the antics are on, stupid flash scares him. otherwise the shutter stays open for years.

LVfishguy

he's so purdy!

07/30/2004, 01:59 AM
thanks chris! he's my baby, i found out how to get him to reveal himself. ...just dangle some freeze dried krill in front of his hole and he pops out within seconds~! Oh, his name is Mr. Eel (yes i know, my head is boiling over with creativity here)

although it is dangerous to get him on a feeding frenzy. he tried to eat one of my chromis because he still smelled the shrimp in the water, if my chromis were any slower he would of been eel food~

very nice, those tiles on the stand are sweet I think a 150w or 175 w MH would be awesome in that canopy.

I like Mr Eel :D

Bobby, do you have PhotoShop? A levels adjustment will lighten that picture up if you want.
