I am considering the purchase of a 1,000 gallon tank (96x48x48), and plan on placing 7-8 inches for a sand bed. To avoid the cost of buying "live sand" would you advise using a fine grained sand from the intertidal zone. I live in Wilmington NC, at Wrightsville Beach, and the water is very clear and the sand exceptionally clean. I have used unfiltered water from UNCW with great success in my reef tank. I would be able to "cure" the sand until the chemistry is balanced. I would take the sand bed from existing tanks and refugium to seed the new tank and would buy several kits to seed the sand bed. What do you think? And thanks alot for such great advice in the past through your articles etc.

Hi,

[welcome]

I think using natural beach sand is a great idea. I would do it if I could. Your plan sounds pretty good to me.

:D

Good luck! :D
