I agree. How about we have a volunteer to host it at their house? I'd volunteer but I am in Youngstown, a little too far for most of you.

how bouts the union hall by FORD in brookpark,or the national reserve bldg by rms on engle and charge a small fee 1.00 @ the door and vendors 15.00

We need somebody to organize it.

Instead of an indoor location and it being summertime we could reserve a park shelter for 4 hours Elyria parks offer this and so does Cleveland Metroparks along with Findlay state park in Wellington am sure other city parks offer the same also, cost is minimal and we could also hold a pot luck picnic, just my thoughts for a different type of swap

gcrowptc
06/27/2004, 10:27 PM
ok Elyria charges $10 for a pavillion no electric though and Cascade park is beautiful, has a nice playground for the kids, concession stand, hiking trails, again just a thought to make this a different type of swap and involve the family , trade frags, equipment and make friends.

Hi All,

The next All-Ohio frag swap should be sometime this Fall in Columbus. We alternate with NorthEast Ohio and the Columbus area. This one should be big(at least as big as the last one at Salty Critter's new shop). Steve Seal or myself will get the ball rolling on the Coumbus swap. The last one we had in Columbus was downtown at a theater. It was really well done and lots of frags we traded/sold. If anyone is interested we could do a small Northeast Ohio swap sometime this Summer. But, don't swap all your stuff because the Columbus swap is really good.

You can count me in as well. I have yet to attend a frag swap as I am just getting started with corals. One question that I have is why are all the frag swaps or meets during the Winter or some other "cold" time? Why not during the summer when its warm? The last couple of frag events here have been when it snow on the ground.

On another ticket I will check with my buddy to see how much a small hall cost. He does many parties and knows where to go. That way if it rains (like its been doing all summer) we will be covered.

scrummyotool
06/28/2004, 09:09 PM
power is a nice thing for vendors who set up displays corals always look better under light than a bag they've sat in 1/2 the day. inside not at all affected by the rain.

gcrowptc
06/28/2004, 10:18 PM
ok the ? here is do we want a simple no frills swap or a big swap? It seems everyone responding so far is local and wants to trade or aquire a few frags and make new friends, how far does every one want to go with this?

s1xtyfe3t
06/28/2004, 10:29 PM
I don't think it has to be anything too fancy... it'll get the job done either way but I'm sure it would be best to keep the cost down. A simple get together with some trading and maybe a few pizzas should do the trick. As far as how big the swap is depends upon participation of the locals. I'm sure with a little advertisement here on reef central and a flyer in a few of the local stores it would draw a decent crowd. there could possibly be a raffle of donated pieces to cover the costs of renting the hall. I would be willing to donate a coral or a couple of frags to help with this if needed. If there is any need as far as help in planning with this I could help with this too.

s1xtyfe3t

The community room in Hinckley at First Merit bank might be good for a quick summer frag exchange. The last time I signed for the room, there was no fee, you had to clean up before leaving. It's close to I 71, I76, and I 70, so accessible anywhere from Cleveland and Akron areas. (Not too far from where the old Coliseum used to be, but with that gone, there are no traffic jams to contend with.)

Oh man, I was wondering where all the reefers near Cleveland were... here' I've been spending the last year and a half on reeflounge.com... geesh.

Anyway, have you guys ever asked a local university or high-school if you could host it at their facility? During the summer I know there isn't much going on here, so i would assume it is the same at other schools.

gcrowptc
07/01/2004, 10:09 PM
ok this has been viewed 170 times and only a handful of people showing any interest in pulling it off, where do we go from here?

s1xtyfe3t
07/01/2004, 11:32 PM
do it anyways... I say do it at a park. you can get a picnic area for free... throw some burgers on a grill and have a good time. there's plenty on picnic tables for people to set up on. yeah I know it's missing electricity but there's a downside to everything. it's either that or pay for a hall. if noone else wants to plan it I will... however it will be in akron as I have no idea where anything is near cleveland. I have no problem putting out my own money to set this up if people don't mind kicking in a few bucks to reimburse for food. the whole idea is for some people to get together, trade some frags, shoot the breeze, and have a good time. it doesn't really matter how many people show up, it'll still be a good time.

Sharpy
07/02/2004, 12:16 AM
I'm interested!!!!!!, I have a number of frags I've been growing out just for the next swap.

I gotta say I don't care for the park idea. Sounds too dang HOT and no where for the nice setups that some of the fellow reefers and great vendors have.

It can't cost that much for us to find a decent indoor place to have it, all we need it a large room with power. I don't know the area, but I'm sure there has to be a place, even if we all have to chip in a few bucks to attend.

Just my 2ยข...

S1 give me a call tomorrow am on vacation, meeting rooms @ Lorain County Metro Parks are $ 100 picnic shelters some with electric $20 but need to check on availability........we could still use some input from people on this swap it has been 50/50 on outdoor vs. indoor.....I favor informal outdoor, just a bunch of us getting together to trade,or sell some items not a major event, just a friendly gathering....

I dont mind it being outside so long as there is some form of shelter in the event of rain or extreme temps. I dont think electricity is a big issue as long as there is some sun light. The corals at our club meets sit in there bags for roughly 4-5 hours without any ill effects, and I think they would be fine at a small meet. I will drive to wherever the meet is so long as it is not more than an hours drive in either direction. I'm still under suspension and cant afford another DUI. :D J/K

I am only three lights away from state route 30. I am the owner of Carousel Aquatics. At least I am until next week. I decided to sell and go back in to reefs as a hobby. :) I live just around the corner from my store. I've had 2 frag swaps at the store. You can check out who came and see the directions to here.

Thought I'd let everyone know that the 7th All Ohio Frag Swap Date has been set for September 26, 2004, in the Columbus area. the location has not yet been determined.

So if you all are planning to swap, late July or early August would be better.

I think that this swap would be small enough to hold at someones house rather than paying for a shelter.

Let me check my schedule, I may be able to have this mini swap at my house. (I live in Stow).

We are currently looking at two locations, either a Holiday Inn or the Shriners complex down here. The decision is probably going to be made either this weekend or on Aug 5th when we get together to make finalize the plans.

Just so you know our meetings are on hold for the summer. I think our next meeting will be in September. Maybe one of the officers could give us a heads up as to when the meets will resume.

Will there be an August meeting? Did the third Friday of each month go over well enough to repeat it this year or are we going back to Thursdays? There are a few of us who need some lead time to plan their work schedule so it doesn't collide. Maybe only one or two of us, but it wouldn't hurt anyone to know in advance.

Thanks for letting all of us use your house for the swap meet. I think everyone had fun and your tank is looking good. We should do an Akron area tank tour before the Columbus meet.

If an Akron tank tour is planned I'd love to have everyone come here. Forces me to clean the glass : )
I'm also thinking that I could host a frag swap in the winter if there is enough interest.

I was just reading the rules for the Akron home tank competition. There are two classes that marine tanks would fit. Top prize in each is $50. Tanks are videotaped in September and October. Winners are announced early November.

What a great time. Would love to do it again some time.

I would guess that we had about 15 - 20 reefs in attendance. Perfect mini swap size.

It was nice to see a few new hobbiest on board (Lots of new stuff to trade).

I hope everyone left with something new.

I want to thank Burgman and Bowman for providing the tables. ConnieReef for the great watermelon. Johndawg for the  and Dendronepthya for the AWSOME slide show prentation of his green house reef system.

I am all for an Akron area tour of tanks. Do we have any volunteers to organize?

Thanks again,

What is a tank tour? Like a progressive dinner? :)

Bowman
08/04/2004, 09:38 AM
You could think of it as a dinner but without food. A tank tour is when a group of hobbyists open up their homes for other hobbyists to visit and see their tanks. It's a great way to see what other people are doing and have done with their tanks.

dory2004
08/04/2004, 07:42 PM
So I would drive house to house and check out the tanks I select because I like their pics, or they are easiest to find?

Rhodophyta
08/05/2004, 05:14 AM
Dory, usually they work out a schedule so that the shortest distance between hosts is traveled. Each host will have a time slot in which they are "open". That way you don't have to give up attending the tour just because you are a host for part of it. The time slots are usually long enough so that not everyone has to arrive or leave each house at the same, which helps in cases where there's not a lot of room to get everyone around a tank. Also people can attend all or parts of the tour. C-SEA used to provide some refreshments and door prizes to encourage everyone to visit every stop but each participant still made their own choice.

:bum: I remember when Canadian Club whiskey used to be a club prize. "CC" and "C-SEA", see?:bum:

When you guys have the Akron tour details worked out, let me know. I may bring over a small group from Pittsburgh. It is always nice to see different tanks. We get a little bored seeing each other's all the time.

Conniereef
08/18/2004, 07:05 AM
There is no date set yet because of low interest. I'm willing to host the tour, but only one other person has volunteered. Anyone else want to take part?
