Hey Guys,

A local glass shop is making me a couple of starfire lenses to fit my PFO mini pendants.

I am curious who else might be interested in getting starfire lenses for their pendants ?

Post here and let me know how many you might be interested in and they we can see about the glass shop making a bunch.

Dave, what would the benefit be? Increased clarity? How's the UV absorption? I might want 4 for my ROIIIs.

Chuck,

The main issue is the increased clarity of the glass, doesn't act like a filter adding a green tinge to the color.

This also means more light passing thru as well.

Any glass will act as a UV blocker for the purposes of the DE bulbs.

As soon as I get my samples you can stop by and see the difference.

As long as they work as a UV blocker for the bulbs I'm in. I've seen the difference between starphire and standard glass, I'm a believer, but I was wondering if the same properties that make the starphire so clear increase UV "pass through". I've had a few, uhm accidents over my tank w/ UV and it doesn't take too long to burn corals. That's my only concern.

Chuck,

Well I will be trying them on my tank first. So everyone will know if it's safe before putting together a big order of lenses.

Dave, you're such a daredevil... ;)

Wow, i'm interested to see what it looks like. If they work well, i might want three.

Dave,

That is something I would be interested in for my set up as well as for Hamilton ReefStar's. Let me know how the results turn out and costs. This could be a stocked "Upgrade" sale potential for me and my customers. Do you have a sensitive enough light meter to measure the difference?

Todd,

Ya I got the sensitive light meter -- Uh.... Okay I am just gonna squint -- LOL

Well I have 5 of the PFO's using matching ballasts and bulbs so it should be pretty easy to spot.

The biggest concern will be the first 48 hours to make sure there is no issue with UV or with Tempering.

Also the standard glass is "Low E" which supposedly helps shield heat. So Have to see how much more heat this is going to push towards the tank. I don't have any heat issues but this might affect other folks with more standard sized tanks.

Chuck,

Let me know when you want to come.... Hey Chuck how come no pics of your big tank ?

Hmmm....b/c everytime I post a pix it looks horrible. To quote Todd March, "how come your pix look like ****?, this after he came by to check out the aquaconnects....I'm really no good at the tank photo thing....

OK Dave, lemme know how next week looks. Maybe next Friday.

Madison, currently an oly 4000z. I'm looking at some other of the semipros though. The Sony and the Canon intrigue me....

The Olympus 8080 is pretty cool - I was looking at it... You can get it at a pretty good price via CostCo online.

I like canon stuff personally, but I think that Sony might be the better buy. In terms of optical quality, they will be almost identical. The lens on the Sony is a little faster, by roughly 50%. That means it doesn't need as much light as the Canon. I also wasn't fond of hearing that in the canon "super macro" mode, you lose about half the resolution. You'd never notice for internet posting, but if you wanted to print something out, then you could see a difference.

I just got a sony Dscf-717 for $450 from amazon. I bought from the sellers marketplace. It was used but in perfect shape. It came with a 128mb memory card and a leather carrying case as well.

Frodo:
Sméagol. Master is here.
[He beckons for Sméagol to come to him.]
Come, Sméagol. Trust master. Come.

Sméagol:
We must... go now?

Frodo:
Sméagol, you must trust master. Follow me, come on. Come. Come, Sméagol. Nice Sméagol. That’s it. Come on.

[As Sméagol comes to the rock face behind which Frodo stands, Faramir's men jump on him, wrestling him to the ground.]

Frodo:
Don’t hurt him! Sméagol, don’t struggle! Sméagol, listen to me!

Sméagol:

I just watched that movie the other night. Hard to hear, all the sound effects, music, then the characters wisper to each other. I felt like an old man " Huh? Wad he say?" And why did they get in that boat at the end anyway?

Hey guys,

Okay

1) Starfire glass is not tempered, so when it heats up it tends to break --- Thank fully it does not shatter, but the edges are sharp.

2) Tempered Starfire glass is available, but it missed the truck the last two shipments. Tempered Starfire Lens will be in on Tuesday.

Dave, I take it you speak from experience about the breakage! Hope you didn't get cut to bad :(

Hey Boys,

I finally got the starfire tempered lens. I took some measurements I will post later. But the glass is about 13% brighter than regular. Have not had a chance to put it over the tank yet to see a color difference.

o2manyfish

Chuck the lenses are about $41 bucks and some change. Tempered with a beveled edge.

But for Madison they are going to cost, $95, for Dat $125 (wait does he even have a tank to light ?), and for Ali $175 - He always has money to burn ---- LOL

Hm, ok, let me know the effects over the tank. If your corals don't get fried from increased UV, I'll need 5 for ROIIIs and 1 for a PFO mini.
