I've really been considering setting up another nano and using my spare 175 watt 10000k mh but I would like to see some pic and here some stories of success and failures.

Here are some links to pictures of our 18 gallon with 175w 10k mh pendant.

Tank at 9 months old:

We then added a refugium to the back of the tank:
http://users.mvillage.com/sweaver/images/tmpimg/refugium.jpg

Then we started seeing pictures of Japanese aquascaping and about 2 weeks ago changed the tank to the following:

We have had good success with the pendant light and no problems with heat.

We are considering changing to the PFO Mini-150w HQI pendant system though.

Also, here is a link to a pic of our 7 gallon with 175w 10k mh pendant:

Nice looking tank NDreefer.:eek1: How long is your photo period and how much water do you loose a day? Why do you wanna go with the 150 mini pendant also?

If you look again you'll notice that I edited my post to add a link to our 7 gallon as well. I think I may have edited after you had already posted a response.

Photo period is 10 hours a day and I lose about 4 cups or 32 ounces of water each day.

The 150 mini pendant contains a higher par value and a little more of a blue look.

It's a lousy pic, but here's a shot of the 15g I had set up with a 175w halide back in '97.

I've never had a mh system so please excuse the dumb questions. I'm looking into a 150 HQI retrofit.

1) It is necessary to use it with a reflector?
2) I hear you are suppose to mount these perpendicular to the tank. Does the reflector fit in the dimensions of a 15 gallon tank?
3) Do you have to use a UV glass for HQI? If I buy a retrofit (i.e. not an enclosed pendant), how do I protect my eyes from the uv?

TIA

Hello Mr9iron,

It has been awhile for me posting but I thought that i would post my site one last time before it changes. This tank had 175w 10,000k and 2X32 CSL power compacts. This tank was up for 7 month's before I took it down to make a bigger one. It will be moved to the office now :D

Mr9Iron,

Sorry I didn't get a chance to reply. Been working double shifts at the WTC. Thanks for the compliment. I am going to be setting up another bowfront at work within 2 weeks with a DSB w/SD sand and I want some ideas on what people would want to see in it. So if you think of something let me know.

Hey Vince, by the way, your tank has taken off. I am immmpreessed:bigeyes: How well does the spraybar work out for the tank ? I was curious about that the last time I saw it. Did you do your web page yourself and what software did you use.

I know alot of questions, sorry.

take care

Pseudo Boy, thanks for the compliment. The spray bar I have in there works great, it creates a nice chaotic motion in the tank which the corals seem to love. As for the web page, Christopher Marks made it for me. You can visit his site at www.nano-reef.com
Theres a great bunch of nano reefers over there.

Thanks mr9iron.I tried to duplicate a big tank setup on a 20.
Specs are as follows:

lighting:10,000k 175 Hamilton
salt:instant ocean
water:RO
Heat:100 watt visitherm
Cooling:micro chiller by Cool Works(50 watts)
current:Maxijet on 15 min timer.
sump pump: maxijet
filteration:live rock,mangroves,macro algae,semi deep sand bed.
water change:Biweekly
ammonia:0
nitrite:0
nitrate:0
phosphate:0
cal:400ppm
alk:3.2~3.4
Cal and alk maintenance:
kalkwasser dosed with a dosing pump that has a float switch attached to it. Float switch maintains water within 1-2cm thereby also maintaining specific gravity constant.Kalkwasser reservoir (5 gal) lasts app. 5-6 days.
Other additions:
1/4 drop of lugols iodine every two weeks along with 4 drops of strontium and magnesium for mangroves.
coral growth:
medium to medium high. Certain species are turning to nuisance.eg. GSP
ease of maintenance:medium.
Besides feeding the fish and mixing kalk every week and by weekly water changes it is almost self sufficient.
Nuisance algae: almost non existant.Clean light build up on front glass once every two weeks.
Future purchases:wave maker to replace the appliance timer.

I have been pretty happy with this setup, mainly due to it being pretty low maintence. If I missed any thing let me know. Oh by the way I pinch the top of the mangroves(harvesting) to maintain height. They grow new shoots in a week or two.

Physh1, thats an exceptionally nice looking nano reef. I really like those lps and softies you have in there. Although im a little concerned about the tang thats in it. I think that little fellow may need more swimming room. One more thing, where did you get your light set up and how much did it cost? Also do you have any heat issues using the 150 watter?

The tang does very well, I have been yelled at for that one more than a few times. He is about ready to be moved into a larger tank. Just waiting for it to cycle out and stabilize. The "hood" is a AquaMedic Aquastarlight hood (24" 150W 13K HQI). I bought it from the LFS I work for. My cost on it was $260. I am very happy with it. The only time I have heat problems is when it is damn hot outside. I usually have the hood 12" above the tank but in hot weather I raise it to 16" and it helps a lot. The tank has also always evaporated a lot (about 1.5 liters a day dripped back in). I think that helps and the Rio 2500 return pump causes a lot of that evaporation.

Cameron

I attached a pic of the hood...

physh1 and astrea those tanks are simply amazing! that gives me something to shoot for now. i have a 250w MH ballast laying around just screaming at me. would like to trade it for a 150 though....250w would be over kill for me.

thanks guys!
