Or is it just me? I seem to notice about this time of year I get a little reddish-brown cyano.... What is the best way to get rid of it? Pull it off the rock and suck it up, decrease photoperiod? Skimmer is running great and macro in the refugium is doing well, so shouldn't be any spike in nutrients.... Lemme know what you guys think....

If it's cyano photoperiods wont matter, it's a nutrient absorbing bacteria and not a true algae. Seeing as how yor skimmer is working try checking your phosphate levels you want them at about .02 some say 0 in fact I thought it was best to maintain 0 but upon further research I found that a small amount of Po4 is needed by corals! I recomend using phosguard and changing it every 3 to 4 weeks or when you notice the pellets have all turned brown. Hope it helps.

i would just suck it up when you can with the water changes and make sure to keep your skimmer clean (maximum performance).

if that doesnt work.....

i was battleing with some dinos for a while that came about back in december when i was out of town for a solid month. I tried quite a few things and the 2 things that did work were running phosphate removers and removing the sandbed(drastic).

if you do decide to run any phosphate removers i have noticed a huge increase in there performance when its fluidized. I recently added one of the cheap two little fishies phosban reactors and it just about killed off the algae in my fuge it was so effective. Nothing had changed on the fuge except running the phospates in the reactor opposed to a filter bag.

I am proud to say i am 99.999% dino free! (dont want to say its completely gone because then you know it will come back with great vengence)

If you are talking about the red cyano , ChemiClean from Boyd Enterprises Miami, Fl (305) 651-2496 will knock it out like a nuke and no effect on any of the fish or corals I use it everytime I have an outbreak it works great!

I just used the chemi-clean you can get it from Jo-Mars in Nitro. But you will have to ask Barry for it as it is not on the shelf.

Chemi Clean= non-erythromycin based "red slime remover"

Chemi Pure= Combination of resins and carbon. Used to remove toxins and discoloration from water.
