Hi,
My name is Jeff, and i just recently moved to Las Vegas from the Bay Area (N.Cali), where i lived for almost 4 years. Before that I lived in Honolulu, HI, where i was born and raised.

My first attempt at a salt water tank was nearly 20 years ago. however, my first "real" salt water tank was started in 2001. Over the last 3 years, i've had a 3g nano, 10g nano reef, 20g FOWLR, 50g mixed reef, 54g hard coral reef, 100g HC reef and now i'm back to just a 50g HC reef. i guess you could say i've been hooked.

i'm a web developer by day, and my other interests include video games, watching movies & reading.

aloha,
jeff

Hello everyone :)

My name is Amy and I am have been in the Vegas area for just over a year now. Just as Jeff has done, I moved from the bay area (Napa Cali). Native Cali resident but I have loved my time here in Vegas.

I started in the hobby in 1998. With a 75 gallon tank sadly met horrific end (front pane blew out). But got back into the hobby quickly there after. Clownfish breeding, harlequin/asterna star breeding. SPS, LPS, softies I love them all. But as of late I have been going SPS nuts. :D I also attend trade show such as IMAC and MACNA yearly.

I am a pastry chef (work on my own) but also enjoy working out/yoga, reading, writing and photography.

Hello future frag traders....

My name is Mike (couldn't have guessed that one, could you?) and I have been addicted for six years. This sounds like some kind of support group, ha ha. It all started with two goldfish and a fishbowl my mother bought my son when he was three. It quickly progressed from that fishbowl to a 90 gallon tank and then to a 180 and then to the 180 plus a 150. With the move to Las Vegas four years ago, I had to give up the 180 (no place for it.)

Well, we just had a baby and we decided to build an addition onto the house so that we wouldn't have to trek up stairs in the middle of the night like we did with the first two kids. As part of that addition, I got my 450 gallon tank. You can see my tank by searching under my username for a thread entitled "450 Progress".

Amy, do you do the pastry chef thing as a job? My wife is always looking for good sources for birthday cakes, etc. Recently, she has been using Little Pastry Chefs. Let me know.

Mike

Hello Las Vegans, My name is Ron. I've moved to Las Vegas in 1998 from Brooklyn, NY to get away from the chaotic city life(although I kinda miss it now). Las Vegas is definately a different experience, and enjoy all the little nuances it has to offer.

My experience in aquariums started when I was around 13 or 14, when an ex-girlfriend of mine needed some dog food and decided to take me to a pet store, which also had fish. My very first fish was a red line snakehead. Some Oscars were thrown in the mix as well as fancy goldfish years later.
Saltwater started as fresh water began to get boring which incidently started in Vegas. I mostly had a FOWLR in a 29 gallon with some clowns and shrooms. I gained more experience and messed with softies and lps, which then lead me to sps as the next challenge. My current tank is a 100 gallon cube which is set up as a mixed reef, but hoping to turn it into an sps dominated tank in the future.

I am a wannabe daytrader in the morning, and a Pharmacy Tech supervisor/lead by night. Enjoy movies, sports, fishing, drinking pina colladas, and getting caught in the rain:D.
Thanx for listening everyone!!

I'll will be in Vagas this weekend and want to check out the LFS,I know from reading they are not worth the visit but I want to check them all out,and I have a few Questions if any one would reply
1. How many people are members of the local reef clubs?
2. Why do the LFS suck
3. Are their enough reefers in Vagas to support a nice store and would they?

Hey Willie,
Our club is brand spankin' new, so we're still in our "membership drive" phase. i don't know how many reefers out here are members of clubs, although i can't imagine it's more than 20 at this point. i also don't know have any proof on why the LFS suck, i think it's a combination of our location and relatively low demand for premium livestock.

these questions could create a nice conversation, i encourage you to add a new thread to our forum, click here (http://reefcentral.com/forums/newthread.php?s=&action=newthread&forumid=301). I would like to keep this thread focused on introductions.

thank you,

Hey Gang,

My name's Drew. I've been in Vegas since Sep 01. I've pretty much had a fish tank since I was about 10 yrs old. I started my first FO about 96. I did my first reef in 98. I sold the whole tank off when I move from Baltimore, Md to here in 01. I just started up a 37 show, which you can see on my progress thread. Hopefully we get a great group here and do some trading.

Hi all, great idea on the new club, maybe some new ideas will stir things up around here a bit.

My name is Matt, I've been in Vegas about 6 years now but grew up about 100 miles north of here. I started in the fishkeeping hobby about 15 years ago, not counting goldfish as a child. It all started with a 20L set up on the kitchen counter, when freshwater lost its appeal I switched it to saltwater, that was it! 11 tanks later in a 1 bedroom apartment I decided to do it for a living.

I opened and operated a LFS in southern Utah, ran it for almost 7 years. Expanded it into quite a large commercial maintenance business and had several 1000+ gallon installations in clubhouses, casinos and even a 1500 gallon "L" shaped tank in the town hall of a small town in southern Utah. Needless to say, I had no life to speak of aside from work, something had to change so I sold the business and have shunned the aquatics industry ever since.

Until about 3 months ago that is............I took my son to a LFS to kill some time, saw a little 12 gallon bowfront on sale, put a retrofit PC light system in it, and the rest is history. I was a reformed reefkeeper but I fell off the wagon. Its now been less than 90 days and I have about $3k worth of equipment sitting in my living room ready for me to start plumbing, sad isnt it :D

When I first started this hobby I was addicted to visiting every LFS in Salt Lake City and surrounding areas (this is where I lived when I was infected with the fishkeeping bug). I learned when and what time each store in a 60 mile radius got their new shipments in and I was there usually within an hour or two of its arrival. Unfortunatly Las Vegas does not have even one LFS I would consider worth visiting, I hold LFS's to a much higher standard now and there are none here even mediocre. I have taken to driving to CA once in a while to get my "fix". I have found a little shop, only about 3 months old, that has excellent livestock, great prices, and knowledgable staff! Yes I know its hard to believe, really its true! Anyway, I bring this up just to let you all know that if you need or want anything from a decent shop i'll probably head down there at least monthly to spend a day LFS browsing, I go through withdrawals if I dont do this at least monthly.

OK OK I ADMIT it, I hit the local stores at least weekly as well, I cant fight the urge. Every once in a while I get there while they are unpacking shipments and I have purchased most of my stuff still in the bag (this from ATM, better in 24 hour old bag water than 1 min in their systems).

Whoa, strayed off subject a bit, sorry. I'll post my life story later

Amy: Im a photography n00b, but seeing your photos I can tell I'm going to have a million questions for you. I really want to document my newest system from its birthday until it becomes a sump for my next one, but I have problems with photography, scares me.

Jeff: You and Amy have your work cut out for you. Valiant effort though, and I will definatly try to be an active part of it.

Mike: Been following your thread since I found this board, well done, you got skills man, I'm jealous. Gratz on the new youngster, I'm quite fond of them myself, I have 3 and 1 in the oven. Well, my wife has one in the oven, 5 months along :)

Drew: Nice job, I also thing that space is perfect for a 120g, perhaps 180 if you knock out some drywall. You can borrow my tools if i can help you design the new 240g your gonna put in that spot. Did I say 300g? I meant 450. See how easy it is to upgrade

Hello everybody!

My name is Donna, I am a 21y/o single mom of a gorgeous 1 y/o baby boy. I have done FW for years, some fish but mostly turtles, crabs, lobsters ect. I always drooled over the pretty saltwater critters while getting supplys for my FW tanks, but saltwater care confused the c**p out of me. Finally, a few weeks ago I found this fourum and started reading. And reading and reading. I'm looking at starting a 75 gal, but after some reaserch, I realized it is going to cost me a fourtune! (just the live rock and sand alone, its crazy!) I had been looking at a 28 gal setup, the person wanted $300 for it, and after some advice here I decided no to get it. Shortly there after, the lady called me and offered it for $200, I couldnt pass it up. So now I have a 28 gal bowfront, with a live sand and rock (about 20 lbs of sand, mabey 30 of rock) an coral beauty angel, a large hermit crab and a lawnmower blenny. I dont plan on putting much money into this tank, as I still have big plans for that 75 gal. I figure this way, I can still have a aquarium, and save up for the bigger one. (I was dying for a tank, I almost bought a freshwater to hold me off untill I could get the 75) After I get the 75 gal ready for critters, I will move everything from the 28 to the 75, and use the 28 for a refugium, quarantine tank, or something like that. Maybe a breeding tank, after I get much more expierence.

So anyway, thats my intro. I'm looking forward to placing group orders(great idea, by the way) and joining in on some activities(if I can bring my son).

Donna

Hi Donna,
Welcome to the club, and congrats on the new tank. i hope it will be a smooth experience for you, finding RC already puts you off to a great start. i'm almost willing to bet that you'll be wanting a 90g before you finish saving up for that 75. :D

please join us on the group order thing, i think the more participation we get, the more we'll benefit in terms of saving $. as for our group activities, we'll try to make sure that everyone of all ages will be welcome.

Donna, hi and welcome! I'll bring my 2 year old daughter along and they can play together.

Also, I just so happen to have a 75 gallon glass tank, never used, sitting in my garage. Bought it about 1.5 months ago and upgraded before i ever set it up. I'm about to list it in the newspaper but make me an offer and its yours! No pressure though, you said you were on a budget now, just thought i'd throw that out there to tempt you.

PS. I'd take $150 for it, has glass tops, striplight, no built in overflow. Very nice quality tank actually.

BTW, when ARE we having a meeting, anything planned in the near future? Perhaps just a get together to meet each other in person and an excuse to drink *cough* refreshing beverages? :D

hey everyone! my name is bobby. I was born in maryland, and moved to vegas when i was 5. I'll be 21 next month, and look forward to getting ID'ed for no reason at all.

My dad used to be in the military and has a 20 gallon fish tank from the phillipines that is encased in bamboo, when i was younger this was our freshwater tank until my little brother decided that the fish needed stronger bones and poured a glass of milk in the tank. My saltwater craving came last summer when I was taking Nevada History @ ccsn, and a requirement was that we visit some sort of museum and write a short essay on it. I went to the Las Vegas Natural History museum and fell in love with a green spotted moray eel named "goofy". After that i started visiting all the LFS's in town and was astonished at the cost. My first visit was F.I.S.H. on bruce, which didnt impress me too much, then some how i ended up at GVA. I was very impressed at how clean the place was compared to other fish stores, and met one of the employees who started to explain to me the processes of keeping a saltwater tank. Shortly thereafter i found reefcentral and started reading like a madman. I re-built the 20 gallon bamboo aquarium with new glass and resealed it all up (the bottom was broken). It took a while but i got the cycle all done (after losing 4 damsels, should of found reefcentral sooner!) and everything is running great in it. In that tank i currently have 2 false percula's and a bi-color blenny. Most of the hermits and snails have died off, so i hope to restocking that tank soon.

One visit to ATM on rainbow and rampart made me fall in love with the Zebra Moray Eel which then became my desired pet. I knew the 20 gallon was too small for it, so i went on my search for a larger tank. Well with my luck, a 55gallon hex fell right into my lap with a built in overflow. I had no idea what the overflow was for or what to do with it, nor did i have a stand. So again i began to read like a madman and I almost have the tank ready to go Live. Shortly after aquiring the tank Adam from GVA called me and told me that my Zebra Eel was in. I went and checked him out, and he was perfect. The only problem was that he wasn't eating...so i left him at the LFS for 2 weeks, then decided to bring him home before someone else snatched him up. I brought him home and introduced him to his new 10 gallon quarantine tank =/ This was in late february I believe, and now the bioblock is growing a beautiful purple corraline algae on it. Although my eel isnt too happy in my quarantine, he's eating well, even from my hand~. So 3 months later and too much money, the stand was completed. The entire stand and sump is custom built and tiled (pictures comming soon!). I recently just started ordering all of the components for the system after the plumbing was complete. The system will be running a RemoraC Urchin protein skimmer, a Mag7 return pump, and a Maxijet 1200 powerhead. I ran into some extra money and decided that i might as well go all out and get decent lighting so i could keep small corals and the such, so i just received my 4x55w PC's in the mail, and i'm finishing up the canopy as we speak.

I am the Tech Supervisor @ Best Buy on maryland parkway, so any computer problems i'll be happy to help =) I also build webpages...do i hear word of a LVVR website?

Im currently going to college full time (im one science credit away from my Associates of Science, which i'm taking currently in summerschool) to persue my bachelors in Physics, and hopefully one day move on to a degree in Astrophysics....yes, i did say astrophysics=)

Its nice to see we have some sort of Reef Organazation going on here in vegas, just in time too it seems=)

i think thats it...

Aye what's going on! Looks like I'm the only Vegas native here aye? Well I'm Jeff, I've lived in vegas all but 2 years of my 24 years here! My wife got me into fish with a 10g fresh water tank and has regretted it since. Maybe that's why we're seperated now? Ah well! I have 2 wonderful boys, 18 months and 4 weeks now, which is killing me not being able to see them! I set up a tank for my father-in-law a year and a half ago and have yet to set up my own! I buy tanks and upgrade them before I set them up. Which by the way I have an 85g, drilled w/corner overflow and a 50 non drilled, for a sump, that i'm looking to get rid of if anyone is interested! hint..hint.. Anyways I work 2 jobs, 70 hours a week, to try to support my saltwater habit but doesn't leave too much time for setting them up! I work in pharmacy so if you need some drugs, go get a script and then we can talk! Let me know about any meeting times and places and if i'm not working I'll drop by.

hi all!

this is my second attempt to make this post....the first seems to have ended in a reefcentral breakdown.

anyway, i have had aquariums for most of my life. i have written a pretty detailed personal history on the lvmas.org site here (http://lvmas.org/lvaquariasociety/WayCool/Members/Pics/D_Tippie.html). the pics are from about 8 months ago...i have added a few additions since then!

i am excited by the activity on this forum and hopefully this carries over to the club as well. i am striving to attend the meeting this weekend and hope that through both local clubs, the needs of the local reefers can be met.

Hi My name is Dusty, my husband who doesnt post things to message boards because he has me to do it is John.

I was born in CO and moved to Vegas when I was 6, I will be 32 this month, yep old lady I know it. Nope I dont like vegas but where am I going to live that doesnt have local/state tax's and low bug population? I am a house wife and also make/sell necklaces for small dogs on the net. We have 2 small dogs and no human children. I am also a pic addict, I love to take them and to see them so if you want pics I can do and if you have any I wana see em I dont care what they are of either! Oh and I have a sad excuse for a digi cam right now.

John was born in Vietnam and moved here when he was 5, he is now 33. He works as a machine operator for a paper product making company. We dont really know what he would be called so we just describe what he does that way.

I have loved sea life for as long as I can remember, but my parents didnt like any kind of pets. When I was 16 I got my first 10g fresh tank and after having 5 tanks of different sizes I realized I was bored with fresh and wanted salt but didnt know how to change over since I was told over and over how very hard it was to keep SW fish. After sending half of my tanks off with my X, I went to just one tank. Then after getting engaged to my current hubby we decided to stop the fresh and get a sw because he really loved the sw fish and corals. I introduced him to the life of keeping fish! muhahaha

We picked out a seaclear system 2 becuase we liked that everything was hidden and all set up for us. Yes we got advice from various LFS and LPS, bad idea but I didnt know anyone who kept SW. Then things got worse, we didnt do very well at picking out fish to keep or inverts, because after 3 1/2 years we had one killer butterfly and one killer red hermit.( I got marine fish book but too late in the game.) The fish and crab would work together to kill other fish, even turning over decorations so the fish couldnt hide from them. So we stopped getting fish till these had passed on, the crab was eaten by the fish and the fish died just a few months ago after a large water change. So here we are changing to reef. I have the corals book by Bonerman(sp?). I have ordered a few more and am just waiting for them to arrive.
Currently we have in our 26 show tank: 30LR 20LS, aqua c remora with maxijet1200, a maxijet 1200 and a seasweep in main part of tank, 2 fire fish, many snails and 3 emerald crabs and maybe a porcelain crabs since we havent seen him in a long time, some Zoa's and ric's, and hairy shrooms (we think) and some unidentified possilbe ric or shroom, and a gorgonian fan of some kind. we also are in process of makeing our wet/dry area of the back tank into a refuge with some mixed macro and LR.

I guess the only other things you should know about me is that I dont check my spelling or grammer, and I use shortened spellings of words frequently, so just sound em out and you will get it ;)
Our only other obsessions are computers/electronics, Chihuahuas, and games, we even met playing EQ ( a game).
Also we change from days to nights every other month so we will come to meetings if John is off that day and we are awake lol. We missed the last one because we over slept.

Hi all, my name is Adam and I have posted here a few times recently. I Was directed to the Las Vegas portion of this site by Amy after i noticed she was from vegas so I pmed her to say hello.

Anyway, my wife and I moved here from NY about 6 years ago so we could buy a house. Since them most of our families have followed along. We have a 2 year old daughter who loves the tank and now another one on the way. I am a pharmaceutical rep selling injectables for OA of the knee and my wife is a teacher.

Buy the way her elementary school just put in a 400 gallon tank that is supposedly going to be a reef. My wife has been put in charge of making an aquarium club as she is the one person with a salt tank at home. This way the daily chores get done by the kids and the tank isnt neglected. Needless to say her only involvment with ours is looking and I have only 8 months or so experience so we will lean on you guys for both the tanks. Ours is a 142 gallon which is built inbetween two walls where a bar used to be. It has running water but no RO unit yet so auto fill not hooked up yet.

We had a 55 gallon fresh water set up and wondered into ATM2 and they saw sucker on our faces told us how easy salt was and been hooked ever since. Imagine that, ATM was our first experience and we are still into the hobby. As I stated before my salt experience is about 10 months but with all the bad advice and wasted dollars we got from ATM its really about 5 months.

Looking forward to being an active member.

By the way Matt I think I met you in Jackies store(lfs) about two weeks ago and you told me about reef central. I was there with my daughter.

We are having Anthony Calfo speaking in Oct. He is a well respected leader in our hobby. That and a big ol beer drinker like the rest of us so it will be a blast I'm sure. Also some frags will be there for all to take part in.

Ryan, welcome to RC and to our forum. Very glad to have you with us and hope to see you post here often. As well as make our meetings. :D

Hi Sin City folk.

My name is Kip and I hail from Colorado, although business takes me to Vegas quite often. I own a number of properties out there and planning to open an office there too. Does that count?

I know Amy, who is a gem, still drool over Mike's tank and agree that you have no good lfs. Tell me if you all want anything brought over from here. We do have a good number of those rare white acropora here.

Personally, I love your restaurants (food is a major hobby of mine) and the cabs that have womens butts on them. Try explaining that one to your kids..........

My love in our hobby is acros, clams and reefs. Setting up a pair of 500's and looking for all kinds of ideas on what not to do.

I have been reefing for about 3 yrs know and have run several nano tanks along with my current 29 and 75 gal reefs.

My new tank that I am currently setting up is a 225 custom built tank 72 x 30 x 23 euro braced that I came acrossed second hand.

My current tank is a garden variety type zoo's, lps, sps, ricodias, clams a few fish and a great looking rbta.

The new Tank will consist almost entirely of Montipora sps mostly caps. Along with my clams and ricordia and of course the RBTA and clowns. With the flow being surge tanks.

Hello everyone

I am not a Vegas resident, but I am looking forward to meeting people that enjoy this hobby. I live in St. George, Ut. My wife knew someone giving away a 200 gallon take 2 1/2 - 3 yrs ago, I wanted to start salt water at that point but she wanted to up grade our 30 gal fresh water. This tank was just too large for us at that time, boy I wish I had it now, so we traded it in on a 100 gal w/ stand and canopy. After 2 years of constant nagging and a trip to Grand Cayman I finally convinced her to let me convert our tank!

My tank has been set up now for 10 weeks. 3 chromis started my collection of fish, one poor little guy just died, 2 false percs and a lmb, a naso tang I just couldn't pass up, and new today a yellow watchman goby. 90 lbs of Fiji live rock and 1oo lbs of argonite provide the start of my reef.

Other critters that live with me are my wife Jen. Who I have been married to now for 4 1/2 years. Her baby Kramer, a 8 year old black lab mix. Our second child Ozzy, a four year old shepard mix that still thinks he is a puppy. Then we have our wild and wacky kits 4 ferrets 1 year and younger Lilu, Lugnuts, Mims, and Kletus. Since I wouldn't allow any of the "fun fish" Jen has set up FO tank for her puffers, we always have had puffers even during our fresh water stint. And her non reef safe wrasses.

Now for human children we currently have 1 17 year old foster child who is our 6th long time placement in 2.5 yrs. We do not have any of our own kids, yet.

I am 27 years old and work for a local excavation company where I am a project manager and estimator. I enjoy just about everything to do with the outdoors, cars, sports, and traveling(mostly for the food:)). My new found hobby of reefing and its search for as much info on reefing as I can get stuffed into my head seems to be taking most of my free time and money.

thanks for including my in your group I hope to meet all of you soon.

Hello everyone my name is kevin. I am Jeff's younger brother and have been living in vegas for about 3 yrs. Previously I spent the first 23 years of my life in Hawaii.
My first experience with salt water fish was about 15 years ago where me and my brothers set up an eel tank at my moms workplace. To make a long story short we landed up with a brined eel. I then took up fish again 3 years ago. Now I have a 40 gallon tank that was home to several breeding seahorses and peppermint shrimp( Now home to amphipods) and a 100 gallon that is home to some dried up sand( Anyone want to buy it? Will sell for pretty cheap). My only living fish is a saddleback clown that is currently calling jeff's refugium home. As of late all my money is being spent on my car.
I am Chef at Nobhill which is a fine dining restaurant located in the MGM Grand. During the little free time I have I enjoy messing around with my car, cooking, watching Hawaii football, beating my bro at ncaa2k5, drinking beer, mojitos, screwdrivers,........ tequila, jack and cokes, well you get the idea.

Hi everyone,

Name here is Jason, callsign KC0ERG. I've loved aquariums forever and have really enjoyed all of the tanks I've had over the years. Exotic goldfish are my favorite fish and I've always wanted a reef tank. I'm a theater technician by trade and have a billion hobbies that I don't have enough time to do.

I'm still in the planning stages for my 125G reef tank that I picked up off of the Las Vegas Freecycling list. It was thoroughly incomplete and included an oddly drilled acrylic tank, stand, canopy with 175W MH equipment, and about a billion pounds of crushed coral. The wood parts need to be relaminated and I need to fashion some doors for the canopy and stand. It's pretty ugly right now, but it should be an incredible tank eventually.

I'm interested in getting the thing up and running with the best equipment without spending a kazillion dollars, so these monthly orders sound like just my thing. :) There's no rush in getting it up and running, so I'll be buying a piece here and a part there until I have enough to fire it up.

I'm currently working my way through _Aquarium Corals_ and am finding it absolutely fascinating.

Looking forward to meeting you all soon,
Jason

Greetings to everyone,

Well after having Cichlids for a number of years I finally dove in and tried my hand at saltwater. Set up my 55 gal tank about a year ago now. I really knew nothing about corals when I got started. Just read a few books, talked to some of the people at the LFS, and have been reading forums like this to try and figure things out as I go. I have only tried some of the more forgiving species like button polyps, colt, and star polyps. I want to learn a bit more before I try anything more advanced. I've been in Las Vegas for 5 years now as an Electrical Engineer, but am originally from Illinois.

Mike

Hello Everyone,

I have had saltwater tank for about 5 years now, Like most people i started with a small 5gal hexagon tank with some tetra's. And went on from there. My first saltwater tank was a 46gal bowfront. Which was basically a disaster, lasting about 9 months. It was your classic case of not reading/knowing enough about it before i dove in head first.

Mupham, your a EE? ME TOO!!!! what frim do you work at? I work over at SH Nevada. (formerlly Syska Hennessy)

Anywayz, I am a Las Vegas native born and raised although i did go to college in Utah for a few years. But i missed ol' sin city too much, i have been back for almost 2 years and am currently working as an electrical engineer.

My current tank is a 120gal, and rather than typing all about it here, just head on over to www.sincityreef.com i have a detailed write up of my tank there. Im glad to have found you all, and i look forward to the next meeting.!!!

Hello to everyone.

My name is Felicia and my husband is Jack. Our son, Jason, and his girlfriend, Daniela, live with us as well as one renter, Brandon. We built a custom home in Centennial Hills. We have always wanted to have a salt water tank. I especially fell in love with the reef tanks. There's a tank at the Del Taco in Victorville that I really enjoy. I haven't been there in quite some time, so I don't even know if they still have it.

Currently we do not have any salt water tanks set up. We were given a tank by a friend. I'm not certain how big it is. I think it's about 100 gallons maybe. We had talk to two fish stores in town and found out that it was going to cost at least $1,000 just to get the tank going with live rock and coral, no fish. Needless to say, the tank's not set up yet.

After Brandon moved in, he had asked us about the tank and told us that he has had salt water tanks in the past and has two large tanks. The smaller of the two he has just set up with fresh water fish and said that we can use his larger tank for the reef. Again, I don't know the size but it is considerably larger than the one that we were going to use.

According to Brandon, reef tanks are the most difficult of all the tanks and requires the most work. He suggested that I do some research on reefs before buying anything. That's when I found ReefCentral and your forum.

We are very interested in attending your next meeting, getting to know everyone, and learning all we can about reefs and what we really need in order to get started. I would really like to get the tank up and running ASAP.

Hamburgers and hot dogs sound just fine. Let us know if we should bring anything.

Felicia

Hi Felicia,
Welcome to RC & LVVR!

A reef tank doesn't have to be difficult to maintain, there are corals of varying degrees of difficulty. Soft corals like kenya trees, xenia, anthelia and the like are relatively easy to keep, and are surprisingly forgiving.

The most challenging part of deciding to go reef is the cost of starting up the tank. Lighting costs a lot, as will LR (as you now know). plus there's cooling costs for those summer days.

Good news though, you've come to the right place to do all your research. my best advice to you is to take your time, and don't rush into buying fish, corals, or equipment until you've got a plan in place.

i'm looking forward to meeting you, so i hope you all can make it next weekend.

Jeff

p.s. you can calculate the volume of your tank with (Length X Width X height) / 231.

Happy to see you here, and to know you want to get reefing! :)

According to Brandon, reef tanks are the most difficult of all the tanks and requires the most work. He suggested that I do some research on reefs before buying anything. That's when I found ReefCentral and your forum.

That is some excellent advise. I hope our club as well as RC can help you in what ever way you need. If I could make a suggestion it would be to buy some good books. :) Here are three I think are excellent if you are just starting out reefing.

We are very interested in attending your next meeting, getting to know everyone, and learning all we can about reefs and what we really need in order to get started. I would really like to get the tank up and running ASAP.

Looking forward to meeting you! It's always exciting to get a new reef started. A good saying to remember is, nothing happen quickly in a reef tank except disaster. This is not a hobby to rush with, patience pays off. :D

Hamburgers and hot dogs sound just fine. Let us know if we should bring anything.

Just bring some questions if you have any! Also we have a thread about the meeting, so if you see a fish food you can bring along do that would be awesome. If not no worries, it's more about getting together and having a good time.

My name is Jesse. I'm really new to reefkeeping, but have been enjoying the research and learning something new. My tank's been up for about three months. I'll plan on coming to the meeting in April, but it's on the exact opposite side of town ;) Beats driving in from Kingman though!

I'll bring a keg to the meeting.

Hello,

My name's Taylor. I just moved here from Florida last week. I'll be starting up my 75 gal again. I had to sell everything I had off. Fortunately, I gave a friend of mine some frags and I'm hoping to get them back when my tank's up and running again. I look forward to the next meeting whenever that may be. When I was looking at this club's forum from Florida I saw that you can get a 5% discount and free shipping from MarineDepot. Who can I talk to, I've got a big order.

Thanks and look forward to meeting you...

P.S. the prices here are at least 2X Florida for livestock...ouch...look forward to trading.

Welcome to Vegas Taylor! :)

I'm working on getting a behind the scenes tour of the Shark Reef next month, if we are able to score that (waiting for a return call) I hope you can make it.

Jeff (opihi) is the man when it comes time to do the MD orders. We'll see about getting a group buy soon. I have some odds and ends I could use. :)

Well my name is Burk Lattimore, but everyone call me BJ. I am getting ready to move to Vegas from Dallas, TX
I have had a lot of FW tanks, and then switched to SW. Right now I have a 200 gal FOWLR that when I move I hope to setup as a reef tank.
So what are the LFS like?
thanks for your time and I hope to meet some of yall soon.

Welcome BJ! :D I hope we can meet you too soon. That's quite a move, but you should enjoy Vegas I'm sure.

The LFS action is growing here. The three I'd recommend would be Green Valley Aquarium in Henderson, Tropical Expressions, and a new one Instareef. I haven't checked out Instareef yet but they have a website here (http://www.instareef.com./HomePage.html). Some members have been and are very impressed. :)

Hello all

Moved to Las Vegas in 1989 from Phoenix, Az

I have allways had a fish tank going all my life. Freshwater and saltwater, S/W fish with liverock. Love the RC forums and now trying out the reef setup.
I have spent close to 8k so far and counting. I really want to make this reef tank work out. So far after up and running 3 months lookin real good. I think I lost my first Anemone, as to it dissapeard. I need to learn how and what to feed the corals too.
Hopefully this club and RC will make it worth it.

Hello everyone,
I would like to first of all thank everyone for starting a club like this in vegas. I think this really has the potential to change the reef industry in this town. My name is Clint and i've lived in vegas for about 18 years now, and am personally getting a little tired of it but thats another story.
I'm an automotive technician at carmax by day, and college student by night. I got into reef keeping about a year ago when my wonderful girlfriend got me a 3.5 gal hex tank with a piece of liverock, some sand, and a sexy shrimp. At that time i didnt have a clue about these tanks or what she was getting me into. Needless to say i fell i love with the hobby. Now I have a 12 gal custom hex tank that seems to be doing very well with a lot more sexy shrimp ;) I am looking to start a much larger tank once i find a more permenant place of residance. I used to post on thereeftank.com but now that i found a local club im sure ill be spending a lot more time here that over there.
I got to meet everyone at the meeting at the shark reef today. I thought it went great and am looking forward to the next one. It was great seeing Bobby there, havn't seen him since highschool. Anyways enough with the chitchat, I think its really cool what you guys are all doing for the hobby in vegas and just hope that this can continue to grow.

HI all,

looks like I just missed a great time at mandalay.

my name is Terry, I moved down here to Pahrump from Idaho last year. (messy Divorce, Parents health was bad needed help with business.......yada yada yada.) so here I am. MAN IS IT HOT DOWN HERE. winters are great but I do miss the snow.

I was bit by the Aquarium bug about 4 years ago when I bought my step daughter a 10 gal. for her gold fish. 1 1/2 years and 3 FW tanks later, I was starting a 29 nano. I was just starting to get into softies when............. let's just say I got the boat and the Dog.

I am out of town quite a bit, which makes it challenging keeping a reef. but with the homemade drip system I have made and a few tweeks all my critters seem to be as happy as you could be in a small box of water.

I would like to make the next meeting, do you have a date yet?
I just joined vegasreefers.com and will be posting this over there also, just to say Hi.

Talk at y'all later

Hello, all I posted on the LVVR web site. Thought I should do it here as well. Long time lurker to this site.

I currently have a 55 gallon- 440W of VHO light, 10 gal. refugium, and Aqua-C remora that I picked up for free from someone who didn't like it because it skimmed too much.

Primarily a zoa tank with three monti's of any size and some mushrooms, ohh and enough hair algae to feed the world!

Fish include a regal blue tang, pair of ocellaris clowns, one damsel, and an Anthias that is slowly starving no matter what I try.

I am a long time fish person who only recently moved down here. Tried to get involved in the LVMAS, but never could. Definitely would like to help get a club started in Vegas. I am from SLC, UT and enjoyed both fresh and salt clubs up there.

Looking forward to meeting all of you real soon.

Hey guys,

I posted this message on the LVVR site but just for kicks I'll intro again here.

My name is Fernando and I have been in Vegas for about 3 years now. I just got my first ever aquarium about 2 months ago. If you would have asked me anything about fish 2 months ago I wouldn't been able to tell you much more than they live underwater. Now, I still can’t tell you much more . I have a wife and two boys (11, and 3) and we moved here because the Air Force said we had to.

Ok, here's my set up... I have a 75 gal. FO tank, ProClear Aquatics 150 gal wet/dry, 11 gal sump, venturi skimmer, 70 lbs of lace/base/dead rock, 50 lbs sand (crush coral "0"), 10 gal quarantine.

I don't know much, but I'm enjoying the hobby like crazy so far. I look forward to find out where, and where not to go, and who to listen to here in town. I’m also looking forward to sharing my experiences as well as learning from others.

Hey there everybody, I think I've introduced myself once before, but that was then, this is now... I am officially moving to Las Vegas next Saturday (3/11/06).

I have a few concerns involving my move. First off, I will be moving my 29-gallon tank from Lake Tahoe to Las Vegas... I think everything will go smooth, but what I would really like to know is, where can I turn if they don't?

I guess that question translates into: "I'll be moving to Summerlin and want to know where the closest and best aquarium store is."

Okay, that's it for now, but I'm sure I'll post some more questions over the next week.
