Hi,

I'm not sure if I understood your question correctly but I'll try to answer as if I did ;)
Why formation of gametangia would be bad? Plainly, it is an indication that your algae's thalli will be destroyed and once it is formed,there is no way to save it.To avoid having to deal with the aftermath of the sporulation, the entire clump or bunch that has the papillae formed has to be removed from the tank/refugium.

Indeed. there is no turning back at that point, and the results can be anywhere from harmless to quite debilitating to the system. It's usually more on the harmless side, but some algal sexual events can be pretty spectacular.
