Hello.
Here's the outline of the talk I have prepared for the May meeting. I will guage the length of the talk so that we don't run late. Depending on the continuity of the discussion, I may just talk about phytoplankton tomorrow evening, as having a successful phytoplankton culture is paramount in the culture of rotifers, IMO.
1. Why Plankton?
. A. Food for zooplankton
. B. Food for the tank… observations and gathered opinions
. C. Food for Giant Clams of Tridacna Sp.
. D. Using phytoplankton for culturing live rock, and nutrient processing abilities through photosynthesis.
2. Zooplankton
. A. Uses in the home aquaria
. B. What to expect from daily zooplankton feeding, and what not to expect
. C. Balancing a rotifer culture with a Phytoplankton culture
3.Home culture of phytoplankton
. A. Items needed
. . i. Lighting
. . ii. Culture source
. . iii. Time management
. . iv. How much plankton to you need?
. B. Culture medium
. C. When good cultures go bad; the learning curve.
4. Home culture of zooplankton
. A. Batch or Continuous culture? Author’s preference
. B. Tank setup
. C. Food
. D. Plankton Collector
. E. The fine art of culturing
. . i. starting from cysts
. . ii. starting from a culture
. . iii. population… your guide to success
. . iv. harvesting
. F. Crashes… a fact of life.
5. Reflections of daily feeding of Zooplankton for SPS health.
6. Conclusion and questions
Depending on our future resources (and whether or not I can find a projector) I may be using powerpoint presentations. We'll see where it goes from here.
Regards,
Rob
