yeah i have heard it is popular...just wanting to know what people thought of it.

i am sure it would be a pain in the butt to go from 2x36w to 1-175w MH.

also, what about heat....i am sure that is terrible

I am actually waiting on the parts to wire a 250 watt MH for my tank. I was originally going to put it on a 10 gallon (quite a distance from the water to dissipate the heat) and keep high light critters, but now I am either going to put it on a 20 gallon, or wire a 175 to put on the 10 gallon. I really like the look of the MH, so after reading all of the posts on DIY MH's, I decided to take a shot at it. I wasn't able to find any pics of the MH's over a nano tank, but have read where people have done it with great results.

Depends on what you want to call a Nano? Here's a picture of a 250watt 12k bulb on my 20g. Dont mind the algae mess on the glass, i need to house clean! :D

opps, pics too big! Just click on my sig.

I just set up a 10gal nano with a 250watt Iwaski and 2-36watt AH supply "actinics". I have two fans in the hood and have been monitoring temp for two days. No liverock yet but the temp is running 79.5-81. I have a Tsunami auto topoff so SG wont be a problem either.

Totlxtc, couldn't get to the pics as the page asks for a password.

Nascar886, you are making me rethink the 250 watts :) What is your average room temp, and do you have a heater in the tank? Also, what are you keeping/planning to keep in the tank? I bet it looks great!

Thanks!

I got that to the first time, but worked the second? I have it listed as public so i'm not sure why its doing that.

Try this link Webphotos (http://www.webphotos.com/)

Then in members albums area type in chucke as the nickname.

Ocean, I guess I should have mentioned that the room temp is at 75-76deg. I plan on keeping strictly sps. Yes I have a 250watt heater, Its overkill but works fast and is not on very long.

Totlxtc, Thanks for sharing the great pics! It looks great!

Nascar886, Thanks for the info! I think I am going to go for the 260 watt instead of the 175. I'll post my pics when I get it all together.

Thanks again!!

Totlxtc,
Cant see the pics from those links,
It asks me to login.

Got another url?

Thanks

I like Nascars settup. Although I aspire to a mostly sps nano myself. I plan on having two 100w MH on mine since thats what I have. Actually I have three. I might trade one of them for some sps corals. It has the normal room lighting lamp which I am now using. I may go to the 5500k lamp which is the only available spectrum for 100w. So far things are doing fine with the one lamp but sps require strong lights. They like 5500k or 6500k which is most like normal sun btw I think. Actinics are for "our" eyes really IMO. Blues do penetrate deeper however into the water for a deep tank I'm told.

ReefHawk,

Try the second link i posted. Then there are 2 log in sections, top one asks for a password, bottom one is for visiting. It must of worked for Ocean? Other than that i dont know what to say other than i need to just get my own space on the web.

Ocean,

My tanks temps is similar to Nascars. When i run the central air (76degrees) the tank stays at 76 w/o a heater. So then you just have to set the heater to what temp you want the tank to be. If i dont run the central air the tank temp hangs around 82 degrees with (2) 4" fans blowing in the hood and no need for the heater. LIke Nascar said, you will get alot of evaporation with the MH and fans. SO a good topoff is highly recommended. That or adding a gallon or two every day. :eek1:

I was able to access the pictures by going to the link listed as "Webphotos" in Totlxtc's 2nd post. It took me right to the site without having to enter a nickname. HTH!

Hey Nascar886
Do you have any pics of your hood you could show me. How high from the water surface did you put those bulbs? I'm very interested in it. Also why did you go with the 250 vers the 175's Which bulb do you use?
I plan on adding this to my 15gal which has (2) 55watt PC's

Oohnoo, I don't have a scanner or digicam-sorry. My bulb is from bottom of bulb to top of water 6
". The canopy is pretty basic made out of 3/4" plywood. I made the front hinged so i can feed w/o removing canopy. I also have 2 36watt blues on either side of halide. I drilled 12 2-1/2" holes in canopy, 6 on top 6on back.
I chose the 250watt Iwaski for the $100 DIY ballast/socket.
