If you go with the zoanthids they will keep under powercompacts or vho or halides.......If you go with one of those acros then 175 minimum halide but a 250 watter is recomended....

The zoas or sps? not the sps, I'm not even sure I want something that nice for my first sps. The zoas would prob be alright but if I were you I would start with something cheaper.

drummerman2003
03/10/2004, 02:22 PM
how do you think they would work in my nano?

its got 2-10 watt bulbs that are 50/50 each... 50% 10,000k daylight and 50% actinic 03 blue

would they work in there ya think?

Scuba Dog
03/10/2004, 02:22 PM
the orange red digitata would and could be kept under vho or power compacts....not shure if it would keep its color though, and the green slimer would keep under those lights as well up high in the tank.........drummerman2003

Hum would stay away from the sps then....would go with zoantids, even then might need more light....

Scuba Dog
03/10/2004, 02:26 PM
there is 2 of the brain attack left since i got one, and there is several of the rings of fire left....

03/10/2004, 02:30 PM
well i was thinkin of in the future building a new canopy and stand for the 5 gallon and putting 5 of those 50/50 in there... i figure that would light it up... 10 watts per gallon... but would that be overkill or not enough? im not sure what i want to do yet coral wise lol i might even try other lights later one...

Scuba Dog
03/10/2004, 02:34 PM
drummerman2003
Well ya can never have to much light....it would not be over kill

drummerman2003
03/10/2004, 02:35 PM
you think anything would survive under 20 watts in a 5 gallon?

IHope to have a couple frags to trade before long they're not hard to keep I try to recommend five watts or higher with PC
our VHO we'll survive under less but not as well i have over 7
and believe that's what you need to shoot for to have something
close to lower ind MH lighting the 55 im working on well have
2*175 mh and 220watt VHO act.
I love the vho act :D

thedogofwar
03/10/2004, 09:53 PM
I started with 150W of VHO on my 29. Mine all grew fairly well. I have 3 different colonies. I'll give you some frags, maybe not the oranges though, I'm not sure I can get them off the rock they spread to. I've got some xenia too I can and need to frag I think. it's getting too large. I'm just not sure how to attach the frags.

You need to go to the zoanthids forum for awhile. Make sure you find the threads about the zoanthid accident emergencies. They can be toxic, some more than others.

oh and I saw a thread on reef freak today about MH for $50. 70W I'm not sure what temps will do on 5g though.

i think im gonna build me a canopy, and put 2 10000k flourecents, and 2 50/50 bulbs in there... should = like 40 watts... and i might throw in something to act as moonlight, like leds or somethin for night... but how many watts per gallon is suggested?

thedogofwar
03/11/2004, 12:50 PM
How deep is a 5G? what are the dimensions? You need to forget all about that watt/g figure. it's so out of place with todays technology.

I'd look for some PC's. A powerquad. it's 18" of 96W PC

that would be an expensive light for a small tank.. that will have to come after the 20 gallon is ready to go

You can check out home depot and see ewwhat kind of compact flosent ballasts they have, i would look for something like a 28 watter or more, then all you would have to do is get the right kelvin rated lamp and save some bucks, or perhaps pick up a good reflector that makes all the difference in the world....and on the ballast it would have to have the right type of socket or perhaps a adapter would do.....I bet a search on DIY would do wonders.....here at that forum, they also have a nano fourm here as well....

I haven't gone there to verfify myself (yet), but I have heard WalMart sells a 65W PC for $25 with bulb!

Sounds like a good buy to me.

____________________________________________________

"The Walmart light is manufactured by Lights of America (model #6065), a company that sells a lot of exterior type lighting I've seen at Home Depot. It is a 65 watt power compact light (with a 5500K bulb) that I actually found in the worklight section at Walmart. It cost $25 and requires only a few modifications before it's great for reef tanks. The stand comes off very easily and it can be set on top of the glass or mounted in a hood. I recommend drilling holes in the top to vent as it does get a little hot after running all day. I also constructed a little tinfoil reflector since I haven't had the chance to build a hood yet, but that is purely optional. I use 3 of these on my reef for 6.5 watts per gallon of lighting, and my colt coral has almost doubled in size over 6 weeks."

get a 96w quad pc setup
e-z ballast its plug and play
if you can keep water moving good i think you could have some very nice zoa colonies
try to make an auto top off system for the tank it will make things very easy in the long run
biggest problem with nano tanks is evaporation

Options I would use:

2 10 Watt 50/50 bulbs frmo coralife in the stock hood
2 19 Watt 6500k bulbs available at home depot in stock hood
1 10 watt 50/50 bulb and 1 19 watt bulb

This will give you as much as 38 watts. I would use at least 1 50/50 bulb though for the blue.

This post shows the home depot bulb:

This link is for the 50/50:

And this thread may answer a lot of your questions:
