LUX Meter

I am not clearly understanding the LUX meter.... I understand it measures the light output but at what point do the lights need to be changed... Is there a specific reading one would use as an end point...... Are there certain levels certain corals need to thrive in and is there information out there relating to that?
How would I use the info the meter would give me?

What about PAR meters? Is it along the same line? Can you point out a good source for reading?

Sorry for all the questions, but this meter sounds like it would take the guesswork out of determining when a bulb should be changed.
