<ahem>

Okay lets talk about the meeting. 8:00 at Daltons in the Bellevue Kroger Plaza. I will be 15 to 30 mins late possibly, due to wife working. Are we planning on talking any business, getting formal with stuff or is this a meet and greet only? Obviously beer/other adult beverages will be consumed, but this is a restaraunt too, so everyone is welcome.

I was hoping to get a (virtual) show of hands to call ahead for appropriate seating. And hoping to get some sand to re-seed my tank. (thanks)

I will be there. There may be a fragging involved, depending on whether EB can get one for the club to frag.

Sean was prolly a little gun-shy about elaborating on the frag thing, but...

Basically, our main suppliers (we use three) were ALL *out* of anything worthwhile at the first of the week. One supplier *claims* they will have nice stuff in by the end of the week. We (Sean and myself) are going to TRY like heck to obtain something large and worthwhile. If we fail, I don't think the next meeting will be a total loss. As someone mentioned, there will be LOTS of discussion, and we can really hammer out some stuff, if we put our minds to it.

I think one of the first items on the agenda needs to be for us all to create a contact list with EVERYONE's names, numbers, e-mails, etc., so that in the event of another catastrophe, the "club" will not be stranded. I'd like to see the club survive REGARDLESS of LFS involvement, server crashes, etc. Being an "oldschooler", I still like to back up my info on 3x5" index cards! ;)

I once heard dremels are excellent for fragging, and they sorta cauterize the cut back so it doesn't get infected

If you do frag this coral seeing it will only be in a the tank a few days should we not wait? Chris mentioned not to stress the coral too much. Ebay will get the coral in, it will be in their system for 2 to 3 days, we proceed to cut it, then it goes in our systems. Not to put a damper on things but it is something to think about. Any thoughts?

Coralreefer,

How is my frag doing? Your is still growing strong. By the time we hook up you may not be able to see the glue at all and I am not kidding. I have read that small frags tend to grow at a faster pace. That thing is changing daily. Not like it is 7 inches longer or anything but you can see the difference daily.

cool. looks like we actually may get this thing off the ground! lets all think of some goals we can put down on paper (short term and long term)

such as...providing guidance/advice for newer reefers, promoting captive propagation(duh), captive breeding and sustainable collection, and maybe a social aspect to it (like trips to a reef or aquarium)

Your frag is looking good. Still in the first week though so no growth over the glue yet. This coral is a very upward grower, it will grow new tips & branches before it encrusts the rock.

As for fragging a recent arrival, I thing it would be ok. If it is captive raised it could be kept at EB for a month to stabilize that would be best & it would give everyone a chance to see it in advance. But if it is a wild collected colony early fragging & dispersal would be best since large wild colonies often start to die at the base the frags do better.

If I can get away for a few hours, I'll try to get there too. Thanks for organizing.

Coralreefing is correct as far as a wild colony as long as it has a day or two to get used to the tank. In fact wild corals ( especially sps ) often don't "take off" or show their true colors in captivity until they have been fragged. Corals are programmed to adapt to get used to new conditions when they are fragged. This is how they asexually reproduce on the reef. A storm comes along and breaks off a piece. This piece is taken some way away and if lucky finds a good resting place. It will then adapt to new conditions and often grow differently in color and form. As far as a dremel tool I have never used one and it seems it would just make more of a mess. The "wound", at least on the frag, will be covered with super glue. As far as the wound on the colony it usually heals on its own. With a wild caught colony chances are good that the base might not make it though. Bring it if you would like. It might make a good "experiment". As far as gloves different people have different reactions but the corals usually associated with those reactions are soft corals. Im sure they would be a good precaution for people that don't know. I doubt Sean will be able to aquire a captive raised coral big enough for everyone as it would be very expensive, but he might. In my opinion a captive raised coral would be fine to frag fairly quick. That's just my opinion and this hobby, we all know, is full of those. The thing I think to avoid with all this is 2 or 3 acclimations in one day. That would be pretty stressfull ( beyond, of course, the rest of it ). Looking forward to Sat!
