I have noticed that alot of people are posting about their fish dying of mysterious causes lately. Not in our personal thread, but in the open forums. I am writting to help educate those newer to the hobby about QT (quarantine tanks).
A QT tank can be anything from a 10 gallon to a 55 or what ever you have around the house. This tank is setup with the sole purpose of allowing fish to be isolated in it until they are found fit to enter the main display tank.
While in QT you are able to observe you new fish and watch it for any infections it may have or other problems that may need immediate action. By having these fish isolated you are able to treat them with chemicals, medications, and hyposalinity treatments that would otherwise kill your invertabrates.
A fish should remain in QT for no less than 6 weeks as that is the life cycle of most of the parasites found in the hobby.
