I just read in the paper this morning that Tennessee has joined 20 other states and will be collecting sales tax on internet purchases starting next January.

I know I buy 99% of my drygoods online and even with shipping and sales tax it will still be 50% cheaper than I can find locally.

I plan on stocking up in the next 11 months.

Let's see,

Light Bulbs, RO/DI replacement filters (and maybe a new membrane too, just in case), some salt (2 or 3- 200 gallon buckets)....

If we'd always had to pay the tax, it wouldn't be a big deal. But getting over for so long has me spoiled. It's really not a big deal, but it's fun when you feel like you are getting a deal and it sucks when the ride is over....

Guys,
Just an FYI you were/are required to pay sales tax on any purchase that was made outside of this state if you are a resident of this state by state law. That includes online purchases. It was just to hard for the state to enforce before. So is this really new?
As an example I bought a PC from one of the Big online suppliers (I don't want to name the vendor) and they charged me state sales tax. This was late last year.

Dell has been voluntarily collecting sales tax on sales made in Tennessee. It was part of the deal that brought the service center to Nashville near the airport. They were not required to by law... they weren't, but we are. I agree there is a law now saying that we're all supposed to pay tax on anything we buy. But this is a new law that will require all companies to collect sales tax at the time of purchase.

I think if this state could they would put a tax on the sales tax.

Just to clear this up a little. This would only affect online businesses with annual sales of $5 millon or more.
I don't think most of the online fish store vendors would be affected
