Let's say you had a picture on the web at this URL
http://www.reefcentral.com/johnl/images/2001-05-20/tank_left.JPG

you would enclose the URL inside the image tags like this
[ img]http://www.reefcentral.com/johnl/images/2001-05-20/tank_left.JPG[/img]
without the leading space

to get this

http://www.reefcentral.com/johnl/images/2001-05-20/tank_left.JPG

The pictures you link to have to be uploaded to a webserver in order to be posted.

The tags are what enclose the location of the picture and its property specifications. If the bracket tags do not work for you, try enclosing your src in the greater than/less than tags.

For example, if your website URL is www.mysite.com/~myname and your pictures are stored in a direct branch directory called pictures, you would post a picture by typing:
(less than sign)img src="http://www.mysite.com/~myname/pictures/picturename.filetype"(greater than sign)
() representing the location for the actual sign, of course.

For an example of this, go to the main RC page and, within your browser, click view -> source -> search -> find and enter the text "img src" without the quotation marks. That will find an image link on the page and show you how the img src was coded.

Hey John,

With a dig camera and scanner, can I post pics on threads here at RC?

Thanks,

I have my own webserver, but several are available for free. Even free site managers such as geocities have image upload capabilities.

Nanook01,

If you had a digital camera, you would not also use a scanner for the same pictures. Scanners render your images into a digital format, the same thing the digital camera does. :)

Having either of these, however, does not preclude needing to upload them to a webserver, it just makes it possible to have something to upload. :)

I know a heck of a lot more about this stuff than I do reefs, so feel free to let me know if you have any more questions. I could post an image for you on my webserver until you could upload it to a freebie.
