After months of red tape, my Red Sea fish have arrived.

10 semivilartus butterfly fish
4 purple tangs
2 asfur angels
2 maculosus angels
2 racoon butterfly fish
2 sohal tangs
2 unicorn tangs
2 naso tangs
2 broomtail wrasses
2 cigar wrasses
1 miniatus grouper
1 niger trigger ( green color)

For all tang police out there , they are all doing great and the purples are schooling. Also the butterfly fish school quite often.

You know what, I think this is the best FO tank i have seen. I keep on coming back to this thread and look at these pictures. It is so clean. You don't see any overflow box, wires, power heads, and etc. It seem you have put a lot of thought into this tank. If I ever go to Thailand I have to see this tank in person.
Good Job.

Gorgeous tank! We were in Thailand in December and spent a week in Phuket. It is so beautiful that we have forgotten about Hawaii and plan to return to Phuket again this December. It must feel nice to increase your tank ten times the size you had before.:D Have you caught any of the fish or corals yourself, there are so many all around Phuket we didn't want to go home. My husband would have a heart attack if I told him I wanted a 1800gallon tank instead of the 500 we have agreed on. I would be able to swim with the fish in your tank. What are you doing to clean it? You mentioned you were getting triggers so I am assuming you won't have the usual clean up crew since they will be eaten.:eek1:  I can't wait to see it fully stocked please keep posting pictures. BTW are you in southern Phuket ?

Sawasdee Krap!

Wow that's a fantastic tank! My wife is in Bangkok right now and visiting her family near Surin and Ubon. A few years ago we were on Koh Samui for a week. Are you near that area?

We have a house and land near Surin that we are planning on moving to in a few years and I'd LOVE to meet the person who built your tank and get an estimate for a (smaller that 1800 though) system like that.

Cheers,

If you're ever comingto Phuket drop me a line. Dave unfortunately the company that made the tank is in Australia, not Thailand. Phuket is quite a distance from Koh Samui, but is similar in that it's a tourist destination and a beautiful island.

I planning to get some golden butterflies, what do you feed them. I had one before, but was unsucessful. You think I have to get more than one? I was think at least 3 for my 180.

eljefe3
02/12/2004, 08:57 AM
The Golden butterflies I have eat whatever I put in. Squid, shrip, mussels, flake food. They enjoy it all and always want more. I think with most butterfly fish that having more than 1 is better than having the fish solo.

eljefe3,

I just looked at this for the first time this AM. Then I noticed you were from Thailand and then the mention of Phuket that has been in the news so much the last couple of days. Glad to hear from Mercedes that all is okay. Well, after what happened just to be alive is great.

Anyway, back to fish stuff.
I know you must have a lot to do but when you get time would you please post the dimensions of that tank or PM me with them? I am planning for a big one but your tank is just enormous. Is it hard to take care of - reach to the bottom? It doesn't look like you went the DSB route, maybe an inch of sand if that.

Nice tank. Very nice tank.

Mercedes,

Sounds like you are still there. Hope you got through this with minimum stress too. Thanks for keeping us updated.

To both of you:
Hope you and yours and all your friends are okay and fair well during this difficult time. I cannot imagine what this must be like nor how we could help. We get tornados here and often see pretty severe devastation but nothing on the scale (so widespread) of what just happened over there. Is there anything you need, anything we can do?

Thanks
Charles

Charles I am fortunate enough to have left a couple days before the tsunami hit. It was so relieving to hear from eljefe3 right away that they were safe. The tank is beautiful the dimensions are 16feet long 4 feet high and 4 feet wide. He does not check the site frequently so it may be some time before he posts but he did say they were safe and escaped major damage.

Thanks Mercedes.

I figured it might be quite a while before he would post again. I am especially glad to hear that his absence from RC is due to his lack of watching it rather than distraction due the current catastrophe over there.

I guess you saw his tank. Did he have very much sand in the bottom? There appeared to be some but it looked like only an inch or so, maybe just enough to cover the bottom. Are you aware of any maintenance issues (difficulty dealing with the extra height)? The two guys in the tank appear to be much shorter than me. 4' must be a tough reach for them but then again they are small enough to get in the tank. I am not sure I could do that without hitting stuff in the tank (bull in a china closet thing - 6'2"+ and my shoulders almost fill a 3'0" door way).

I am planning a 12 x 4.5 x ?? tank. Right now the ?? height is going to be about 3' (my reach + 4-6" DSB). I am wondering about going above my arm's reach. I think it would help with aquascaping on a tank this long to have a little more height but there is the maintenance issue. I want to do a DSB, various corals, etc., but the "being able to reach anything on the bottom" deal looms heavily in the back of my mind as the tank height goes above 30-32" (my reasonably comfortable reach with clenched fingertips). I would like to go about 42" (or the 40-44 range) but this reach issue is bugging me. 4' would really give me something to work with but then I am definitely diving for the bottom. FWIW, I have room to go to 5.5-6' maximum.

What a beautiful tank eljefe3 has. I can certainly see the scale issues of the height with the length and depth on his tank. Just incredible. When I first saw the posts I thought what a nice 180 gallon tank figuring that the 1800 heading was a typo. Then I saw the post about 2 guys standing in it and went to the gallery to see. I remember my first thought was either they are midgets or that is one heck of a tank. With the dimensions from you I see it is the latter though perhaps even bigger than I had thought. It must be magnificent in person. The size of the specimens he put in are also impressive. Kind of helped with the illusion of its true size. BTW, 16x4x4 calculates to a little over 1900 gallon on the exterior dimensions. Even with 1.5" acrylic it must be bigger than 1800.

Glad to hear you were not part of the disaster. I am a Thai food fanatic and frequent several of the really good restaurants we are blessed with here. Have gotten to know the owners pretty well. I have not been since I heard about this because of end of the year stuff and Christmas but I know they all have family still there. I believe the owners of one place are related to the people who cook or cooked for the royal family. They might know the grandson who was killed. What a tragedy, for everyone involved.

What I have heard recently and especially what you wrote about Phuket makes me want to go. Must be very beautiful. Nature will fix that part. Hopefully the human side of it will not be any more painful than it already has been.

Thanks
Charles

Phuket is stunningly beautiful as are the people and of course the food. His tank is a sight to behold and he does have very little sand in it. He puts rubber waders on to get to things he can't reach. We are planning on building a tank that will be roughly 500 gallons maybe a bit more depending on the height. My husband is thinking to do 36 inch height instead of 30 so that he will for sure have 30 inches of water area to aquascape in as we will have a DSB. You are right about the 4 feet looking nice to aquascape with but definitely not reachable unless you are Yao Ming.

chask
12/28/2004, 11:03 PM
Mercedes,

Nice to know about the 36" with the DSB and wish you all the luck with it. Was kind of my idea too but it still isn't much help on a 40-44 or 48" tall tank. I wish I could find a few people who have tried a tank that tall.

Don't know if I can put on some waders and get in the tank. Be afraid of crushing something.

I hope eljefe3 gets back on RC with a few posts of his tank. It will be nice to see it grow out a little. :) It looks sooo nice now but they always do look even better after a little time to 'fill in'.

Thanks
