Shortly, I will be building a canopy to fit within my cap. If I keep the canopy under braces for cap, I will have 5.5 inches to water surface from lens of pendant. I have seen in other forums where 10' seems to be the most often used distance. They are generally talking about mogul based bulbs. Because the pendants have a lens I am not worried about bulb breakage. My question is with reguards to large tanks will the heat out put from these lights at the distance of 5.5 inches be to great!

You should be fine if you have sufficient ventilation. The lenses will end up absorbing a great deal of the heat and re-radiating it, rather than it being absorbed by objects in the tank. I'd be more worried about making sure you give yourself enough room to access the tank without burning yourself.

Because tank is a bow and I am going to build a rectangular box, I will still have the rounded front glass sections of the tops. Three pieces along full front length of tank for access. Marina del Rey what a beautiful place.
Thanks gbtower!
