All,
I just wanted to share my excitement with everyone about my new "girlfriend", as my wife likes to call it. It's a complete dream come true. The story behind it is to long to share, but lets just say that I can't believe that I actually own one THIS BIG. Words can not express my gratitude towards those who have helped me come to this point, of acquiring a dream.

It will be here on the 15th of Jan!!! What a Christmas gift.

I love reefcentral! I say this because, where else could I find such a wealth of knowledge/skills in such a user-friendly website!?! Thank you everyone. (If you can't tell I'm way to happy.) :D

Last thing....to think that I started this hobby with a 45gallon tank 8yrs or so ago.

96X60X36 tank with a 225 (give or take)48X28X36 gallon sump. I will be attaching my 125 as the refugium. I already have the stand, pumps, skimmer, chiller, and calcium reactor for it. It will also be on a closed loop system too.

Do you have any pics of the stand, pumps, skimmer, chiller, and calcium reactor? This sounds like an awesome project. I bet its going to seem like a long wait for the tank! -Will

Since you're only a few miles from me (I'm in Beaverton), you might want to come visit my set-up to see what might be applicable to your system. I know from experience that mistakes at this level are costly. My math has your set-up at 900gals. 96 X 36 X 60 /231 =897. A great project... congratulations.

I was waiting for you to chime in Steve!

Can you say ROADTRIP? I still need to come by to check out the new 850, but it would be too sweet to see both on the same day.

I will attempt to post them, but I need to find the time. If anyone would like to pm me with an email addie and is willing to post them for me that would be much appreciated.

Lighting- I'm still working on a couple of options, but I will employ my 4 400w HQI 10k's to start the job. It looks as if I will need another 4 more, but I'm also looking at the 1000w PFO setup. Of course I will be running VHO's too.

Deltec Cal Reactor a PF1000

Deltec AP703 for skimming, but I am planning on purchasing another Deltec unit.

Chiller
Pacific Coast Chiller for the moment 1/2 horse power, but that may change to the 1hp chiller/heater combo or greater. F.Y.I the current 1hp on it keeps it at a stable 58 degrees (I share more of this on this subject later.)

Steve
I have met you before and you know me. Yes, I did the math on that one too. I came out with the same number. Dunno why but that is what I was told that it was. I will take you up on that offer. Expect a PM from me.

One more thing the sump/wet dry are larger than what I stated, after new measurements. Now onto my amazing story of how I acquired this tank and setup.

How did I buy a "1000" ,actual 900, gallon tank, sump, SEQ pumps, chiller, UV and stand? Well, I'm about to tell you.
When you add all that up it comes out to some serious cash. F.Y.I the tank cost no less than 14,000k + alone.

Let's just start by stating the obvious....I just purchased the Deltec skimmer and Cal reactor here this last month after the nasty experience I had with Fedex Ground. breaking the Euro-Reef 12-4 EXT, and they broke the Reactor too. Anyway that cost about $3000. for the current reactor and skimmer. You will see why I mention this later.

So just the other day I ran across the current owner of a "1000" gallon tank. Currently setup and running. Well, I was drooling at the sheer size and beauty of the tank and setup. Naturally of course, I stated how, "I would do anything for such a tank of my own and I was determined to buy a large tank in the very near future." Reef tank of course!
Then I heard these words....."Well, I'm thinking of selling the tank."
At this point I could not bite my tounge and natural inclenation took over me. " How much do you want for it?" I didn't know if it was rude or not, thinking surely I couldn't afford even $10,000 at that very moment. To premature to ask that kind of question to someone so serious. The response literaly almost made me faint.
"I will sell you the whole system, tank and all, including shipping and ANYTHING you need to set it up or make it better for ________." (forgive the spelling...to lazy to check)

At this point I would like to hear your guesses on how much I paid of the WHOLE setup including shipping??????

Price for the entire Setup Shipped $5000.00?

whole system, tank and all, including shipping and ANYTHING you need to set it up or make it better

Too good to be true, no, it couldn't be ...

Are you sure this wasn't in a dream??!! This sounds awesome. Especially the part about "ANYTHING you need to make it better"

I'd say it was $2,000 to ship is alone. I'm not sure how much he sold it for, but $20,000 would be a steal.

My guess will be $1.95

Are you going to tell us? :D

On second thought, ship the tank to me, these are probably stolen goods obtained by the "reef mafia" which is why they were sold so fast and cheaply. I'll take care of it... pm me if interested ... maybe just some of it ... please

30 to 50 dollars per gallon to setup your tank, right?

$2000!!!!!!!

Thanx everyone, I'm so excited about both the baby and the tank.

I'll get the last of the pics tonight. nothing really more than what you've seen already.

I plan on taking a picture of myself and my wife in the tank when I get it. With water in it of course!!!!
I want to see what its like to be a fish or watch my little puffer wife swimming around all happy. My wife is so tiny that its hard to even imagine a baby inside of her.

I would love to have corals frags for you guys/gals and share what I have too.
I plan on adding 2 or 3 SEQ23's for the closed loop and I think that is what is actually going to take most of my time setting up.

LARGE TANK OWNERS

HOW did you fill your tank the first time and with what kind of water? I'm thinking about water conservation ($). All that water wasted on RO/DI. on a thousand plus gallons, not only the tank, but including the sump and fuge. I did this on my 125, but at 10x's that, that's a lot of water wasted. I need some answers on this one, for sure.

Nausicaa,
I know that is a lot of water. Have you thought about having the water sit out for a couple of days instead of wasting water then pumping the water into the tank?

Nausicaa
01/06/2004, 06:05 AM
Sorry, been away for a while.

Thanx again I'm excited about both so much it crazy just thinking about it all.

The tank is going to be moved by pros. No fooling around with a tank this size. The sharks were already sold.

I had the chance to visit SteveW. and see his tank in person. As you can imagine for those who have not seen it in person...pics just don't do it justice! A big thank you to him.

One thing I wanted to set straight is the fact that I'm not setting this tank up as of yet. It already has a place to stay. Why? Well, I'm moving to Bellevue WA. So its going to take sometime to get everything setup perfectly. Seeing Steve's setup was helpful, I needed to see the whole closed loop in person, because I never gave the idea a second thought until now. After talking about it, I came to the conclusion that I was thinking to hard about it...way to easy to figure out. Other than that I'm going to continue to take care of everything else the way I always have, just a bigger toy.

Last thing..before you ask, I don't plan on taking pics of every single move and setup. Other's have already done this (which has been very cool I might add), but I'm not big on doing that sorta thing myself.

Nausicaa
01/06/2004, 06:15 AM
Qmonroe

Can you explain how that would be of any sorta benefit?

Thanx for the response. By the way, I know that many have not given the cost of water a second thought, but I'm a penny pincher. And I hate thinking about wasting money on WATER which I wish that I could get for free too, but if that is what I have to do, then so be it.

Sure, I'll post pics when I get the chance. The move is going to take place on the 20th, setbacks do to the weather conditions.

Once again, it will be a while before I get it setup in WA. Big move, job change, new baby, new tank. Its a lot to juggle at once, but its all worth it. After I get things situated things will definitely be looking very bright have the means to get things "perfect" ;)

Nausicaa: Dont bother with a 2nd Deltec. Try a Schuran. GO here: http://www.schuran.com An AQ400 would be an awesome matchup. THe riser tube is always 100% clean with the continuos washdown built into the riser tube, no other skimmer works as well due to this one simple reason. If your going to do a foreign skimmer, do it right! =)

I do have a suggestion for all the waste water - clean it. By placing a pump pressure rated at around your city supply and attaching it to a large vat of water, place the clean outgoing water in your tank and the waste water back into your large vat. Eventually you will have to refill your vat as the water level will continually lower as your tank fills. I have made the connector from the pump (throttled down with gate valve Iwaki100RLT - thanks Jonathen @ MAS) to the Kent RO/DI using a replacement plastic garden hose attachment/PVC and clear plastic tubing mated to both. Good luck!

That tank is totally awesome, is it gonna stay aggresive or is it gonna be a reef?

So what kind of water changes are gonna happen now? 10% a week, LOL 100g water changes. God that things gonna cost money.

Ohh, just for comparison, get a pic of a person standing next to the tank.

I don't think I would pay $7,600 for a skimmer if you paid 2,000 for the rest of your setup. Its just not right. :D A nitrate filter sounds like a good idea, although I don't know much about them. Even if their expensive it would probably save you a lot of money w/ out water changes. But then again there are so many advantages to doing water changes, like replenishing the elements back in to the water. If I were you I would talk to people on the forum who have 500+ gal. tanks to get advice. Good luck.

I dont know anyone that has one, but they look like nice skimmers. Dont forget that the AQ400 that I pasted the tech data on is for a 20,000 litre tank...or 5,300 gallons.

If the washer worked effectively, and kept my skimmer clean... WOW, wouldnt that be great. And I'm speaking from the experience of my 200 gallon system. I'll never have the free time to maintain a 5,000 gallon tank.

That's a bit steeeeep for a skimmer. Maybe if I had bottomless pockets and it could do my waterchanges and everything else too maybe I'd consider it.

Im looking to try and import them myself, I want to have a pair of AQ400's for my holding tanks. As for their rating, I would honestly cut them in half at the very least. The AQ400 I would say in reality is good for tanks up to about 2500 gallons heavily stocked, just by the air intake potential and the size of the reaction chamber. Just like every other company, they rediculously overrate their skimmers ability. If they are priced rediculous Ill probably just go with the poor man's version of them with a pair of RK2's. But I think my cost will end up being like half what Aurora Dave quoted from a basic currency translation.

MAS

Looks like I can get my hands on Schuran. If I order 2 skimmers at once I get a decent discount. Id have to order up 2(one for my store and one for someone here online)of the professional skimmers to get a significant discount. But if someone here is willing to pick one up and be a ginea pig like myself for trying the product out, they can get it at my cost, plus freight shipping charges. Im looking to pick up the AQ400 and the CR-400 Ca reactor.

Example: Schuran AQ 250, My cost is 1890 in Euro dollars. Current USD translation equals $2420 in USD. Im not sure what retail is, but Im assuming it is higher.

Euro dollar retail for the AQ 250 is around 3300 from doing some basic searches.

A nitrate filter is the equivilant of an artificial DSB. It's a large container (air tight and black to keep algea from growing) with fine media (large surface area) that has a really slow flow rate going through it (slow enough that aerobic bacteria only live near the intakes use all of the O2- I'm not sure how slow exactly, you'll have to find this on your own). You would have to make it yourself because I don't think that there are any companies out there that would make one big enough for your tank. It might just be easier to have a giant DSB instead of experimenting with this.

You could make a nitrate reducer yourself. Its simply a very long length of tubing wound around or in a pipe.
Water is grazity feed to the nitrate reducer and then to your sump.

You adjust the water flow through the tube so that the water runs out of O2 and you then get anerobic bacteria which process the nitrates.

A board member on RC is selling custom made Nitrate reducers in the selling forum.

Good Luck,

Brian

aerobic bacteria convert ammonia to nitrites and then anaerobic bacteria convert the nitrates to nitrogen and oxygen. I fogot to mention the very best way to remove nitrates, a REFUGIUM! I feel stupid I didn't mention that in the first place :D
-The algea feed off of nitrate and other nutrients in the water
Keep us all updated with the tank (can't wait untill you post pics of when it's set up and stocked hint hint)

Awesome tank....awesome deal! If you want to check out more info on a denitrator check out the following link:

http://www.natureef.com

These things work awesome!!!! I currently am running a 110 gallon tank, mostly sps/lps corals with a couple of softies. I currently have 24 fish in there (which are quickly outgrowing their tank!!!) The fish are fed fairly heavily every day (sometimes twice a day) and my nitrates are at 0 with no water changes!!! I am sure adolf over at Natureef could make you custom denitrator for a tank of that size.

Good Luck.....Keep the pictures coming!

I have used this denitrator on my 300 gallon tank about 6-7 years ago. How can I put this polite. It was the BIGGEST P.O.S. (crap) I have come had in 18 years of tanks. It is a modified timer for out door sprinkler systems. The only worse product on the market could be that magnetic eco-thing. If you do buy that junky denitrator or if anyone uses one. I have bottles of the nigrogone (green liquid they use) that you could have for free.

In general denitrators are no good. I change 100-120 gallons of water a month on my 300 gallon. If you buy salt in bulk it doesn't cost that much.

Sorry, its been awhile. Here is a cheezy pic of me in front of the tank. I'll get better pics later. The other ones that I took didn't quite turn out. I just got the 6 200gallon buckets of salt in yesterday too. I'm working on the plumbing sometime in the up coming week or two. Sat. and Sun. I'm in the process of moving things to storage....then finally up to Bellevue WA.

Thanx

Everyone:
I've been out of town moving and everything plus I do have a job that keeps me very very busy too. As an update I plan on drilling the last of the holes for the closed loop. I wish I had more time for it, but family comes first, believe it or not. My wife would argue that point. :)

So AFTER I have all that I need in place and finish filling it, time permitting, trust me... this forum will be the first to know. I can't give a specific time frame, but hopefully I'll have things nearly completed by this summer, but with a baby girl due in June and a new home I have other concerns, $$$. Thank you all again for your being sooooo patient!

I have a question, that no body else has asked. Why did the guy sell it so cheep? Was he moving ....ETC.... I still trying to figure that part out. Don't get me wrong, if I had that chance, I would have sold a family member for it. LOL

Keep us up to date.

I asked the same exact question. So as it goes, he actually needed the room for the added inventory to expand his wholesale business and warehouse space. The tank was taking up to much room and not everyone out there wants or can find a place to put such a large tank, was his response. THANK GOD for these kinda miracles, some want to have better health or something like that. I just wanted to own a reef this large in my own home before I died or to die in.

Sincerely, I can't remember. Awhile ago Jason (Bel's Tropical) had me send pics of my skimmer and reactor to you. I guess we have talked about you, good things, of course:D

I know that your good friends with Steve weast too, I think. I guess your the man to know, huh?

Well, my joy is all in part due to the UNBELIEVABLE kindness that Steve W. showed me, by selling such a beautiful tank and such an unreal price. I as much as everyone else on here who has been in awe over the deal I got on it, still can't believe it's mine.

Ah, ok, now I remember :) There was a broken part on it (Deltec)? I couldn't make it out from the pic itself and suggested you guys go back to the mfr, for warranty reasons as much as anything.
Steve Weast and I don't know each other well, really. He is a good guy but he went to one of the reef shops here in town and they, in turn, came to me. From that point on, Steve and I had a coupla conversations but that's really about it.
I'd like to *think* I'm the guy to know around here but and I don't quite have that kind of ego :)
Yeah Steve W. is a good guy, we've known each other for years and he's always been kind, courteous, and fair, for these traits I hold him in high regard. Plus he buys his jelly tanks form me - always gets bonus points :D

that would be me. I ended up buying acrylic glue and fortunately that worked. I would have sent it back for the price of the unit), but I was in great need to have it up and running. Works awesome!

That is my next tank. Love to talk to you about that sometime.
I need to know more about the setup on the tanks and what kind of equipment to use, etc.
jelly care too, don't know many people who own them. VERY VERY NICE TANKS by the way.

One thing that I would like to get straight.

Do I own a 1000 gallon tank or do I need to say 900, like others would like for me to say?

Triterium
03/14/2004, 04:08 PM
I have a 23.6 gallon which I call a 25 gallon and a "94 gallon" which probably only holds 90 gallons. :)

Just add a 100 gallon sump and call it 1,000

Acrylics
03/14/2004, 06:00 PM
Actually, I think the nominal volume on yours is 898 gal (yep, gettin' smaller), but the net volume is 796 gal. IIRC, that tank had a 2" top with 3/4" on the sides and bottom.

96 x 60 x 36 OD = 898 gal nominal
94.5 x 58.5 x 33.25 ID = 796 net capacity

Since most tanks are sized based on nominal dims, 900 would be best, but we can round to the nearest thousand and call it good :D

yup, I have a very good sized sump and an extra 125 gallon refuge too. So I know that I have a total of 1000 gallons plus.

so I guess I can say and really be honest saying that I have a 1000 gallon tank
