I want to set up a Nano and wonder what I need for filtration. I have a DSB/LR/Skimmer going on the 75 gallon tank, do I need all the same on a Nano? Can I run a 2-3" Sand Bed, LR and skimmerless, provided I'm good about water changes?

If I run a HOB (That took me a while to figure out it meant Hang On Back) filter, what do I use for media in it? Bio Balls? The squiggly plastic mesh stuff? Is this required if I have a sand bed and LR?

Thanks!

Hi Grif :)
I have a 10g that I run skimmerless. I use an old Penquin 170 for circulation. I am using a foam pad in there right now and a bag of carbon(I am actually using the foam to catch critters to feed the 90, not for biological purposes). The tank has a 2-3"DLSB,10-12lbs.LR,1 Orange Skunk Clownfish. I change a couple gallons of water a week. I haven't really done much with it lately(been busy with the 90). LMK if you would like the specs...they are not currently on my Homepage. Here's a PIC from last week:

Here's my Clown who lives in the Xenia:

Hi Teri! Glad to see the frags have survived. Yours are well up here as well. I just wish I could get the brain to eat more often. I'm lucky if I can get it to eat once a week. I've been putting food in the tank suspended above it to try and get it to extend polyps (before lights come on in the AM) and I only get it to extend them about once a week. I really wish it would be more interested. What were you feeding it? I've tried raw shrimp (okay results) and squid (won't open polyps).

On your filtration - so you don't have a bio-media like the bio-bale or bio-balls in the filter?

If you want take a look at my web site for the 12-gal nano. I had LS, LR, and skimmer. I kept xenia, clams, and various soft corals.

I would do a WC once a month to every other month. The skimmer reduced the amount of maintenance I did.

I recommend a 4" bed. Although my 12-gal was taller than a standard 10-gal. Also you can get a good HOB skimmer CPR, Prism, or Remora. I recommend the CPR 2 because you can put stuff in the return instead of in the tank.
