lol. i agree, i think Rupert is a great name..
its definately more inventive than what i named mine.. Mandy the Mandarin Fish. and when we get a male we're naming it Mandango. we're not very creative...

When I saw his great lips I feel in love with him. He has been in the tank only 5 days and is out running around every time I turn the pumps off for feeding. He comes face to face with me most of the time. I think he likes the cat too. pw

I really want a mandarin, but I'm not too enthused about putting one in the tank yet, because I don't think I've got enough copepods. My 90 is about 8 months old, give or take, and I can see plenty of bugs crawling on the glass, but I'm not sure that they'll repopulate fast enough to keep the fish healthy. Anyone had any experience like mine? Is there a way to tell, a rule of thumb, etc., that would let me know if and when I can keep a mandarin?

How much liverock do you have in the tank?
What other fish are in the tank?
Some fish will out compete the Mandarin for food.
Do you have a sump/refuge?

Do you have a sump/refuge? Those were the questions I was going to ask... :p I made sure I got a mandarin that ate frozen foods before I purchased one. These critters are very hard on your pod population and can out eat their environment. Make sure you research for compatable tank mates so you do not have to limit yourself later. Like if you wanted a scooter blenny the mandarin is out of the question. It is possible to buy pods and grow them as feed... kind of a hassel for 1 fish though.

Ruppert lives in a 125 gal tanks with 125 # of LR. I have capods everywhere. This little bugger eats everything but since he has been in the tank he spends all of his time just eating pods. I think a 90 would be fine for one but not for 2 manderinfish. pw

80 or so lb. live rock, possibly more to be added in the fairly near future. No sump/refuge, although I think it's a possibility that I could work on.

Inhabitants are as follows:
One brittle star
One serpent star
Yellow tang
Mated pair of clowns
Orange spotted goby
Two green chromis

Is the orange spotted goby a sand sifter?

Yes. Does that count the mandarin out, being that the mandarins normally pick at rock, or is it a competition for food issue?

I don't know that it counts out a Mandarin but it isn't helping your cause.
When the goby sifts the sand it's eating the critters in it.
My Mandarin spends about half of his time searching the sandbed for food.
Without a refuge I don't think I would try a Mandarin with the sand sifting goby in the tank but that's just my opinion.

I would really think about getting rid of those clowns too.... Maybe I could find a way to help you out by taking them off your hands... :D

I'm sure you could, Travis. I think that Kara would probably come after you a certain pronged kitchen utensil, though...
