cleaning really large skimmers

Most large reef aquarium owners have a fairly large skimmer hooked up to their system. Removing gunk from the bottom of a very tall skimmer can present quite a challenge. How do you accomplish it?

Long-handle sponge. About every 4 mos. shut down the skimmer, remove the long tube & shop-vac the mixing box,Bob
