Just a question, What is the biggest tank/aquarium in existence. I'm hoping it is a public one!!! What kind of fish does it have? Where is it? Pics, anyone? :D

Biggest aquarium in existence is definitely a public one.

I think the big one at monterey bay is the largest in the USA. Can't remember the largest in the world, but it's not in the US.

I found this article:

World largest aquarium to be built in Moscow

World's largest aquarium will be built near the Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow by September 1, 2003, Joseph Ordzhonikidze, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for foreign relations said on Friday.

This is going to be the largest attraction of this kind in the whole of the world.

The aquarium's square will make up over 13,000 square meters, the total square of the complex will be about 22,500 square meters. The aquarium will be 6 meters underground and about 10 meters high above the land surface. More than ten thousand fishes of different kinds, including 20 three-meter sharks, will be placed in the aquarium.

With given "13k sq meters" and "16m height" & for simplicity in calculation, lets just say its dimensions
are:
114m x 114m x 16m = 374' x 374' x 52'

Cubic Ft = 7,273,552

Now if calculations are semi-correct, (i'm tired counting my fingers on this)... this equates to:
over 54million gallons,
... give or take a million :)

There's one in southern USA (Texas?) being built at 3 million gallons. I think the world's biggest is in Japan.

Yes the world's biggest in japan and the second is in Spain (i think) in Valencia. This last one is the largest european (off course!) followed by the aquarium of Lisbon, my favourite:D

My sister used to work at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, NE. They have 900,000 gallons of aquarium, but only 450,000 of it is on display. It is quite something. If you are ever in the area i would suggest taking the time to visit.

Epcot has a tank that is Atlantic Reef with fiberglass corals/etc and its over 1 million gallons. Camden in NJ has a more local tank with shark, tuna, lots of others at 750,000 gallons. Baltimore main fish tank is I think 330,000 gallons. Monterey open ocean tank is over a million gallons, Ripleys in the Carolinas has a great tunnel tank with shark, sawfish, tons of fish at I think ~550,000 gallons. Japan has some truly huge tanks, large enough to hold whale sharks plus many other critters.

There are others, but if you're talking live coral reef tank then you have to come to NY to Atlantis Marine World (www.atlantismarineworld.com) to see 20,000 gallons of living reef. It is currently the largest closed system live coral reef display in the Americas and I believe the 4th largest on the planet.

First day of schools: A whale shark -- the largest species of fish in the world -- dwarfs the inaugural visitors to the Motobu, Okinawa, sea tank -- the largest aquarium in the world. http://www.ocean-park.go.jp/park_e/frame1.html

That acrylic viewing window is 69' x 22' x 2' thick!!!

:eek2:

P.S. -- It was the largest in the world when it opened in November 2002. I don't know if any larger ones have opened since then.

Bet they don't do 10% water changes :D
