Hi! Blastomussa is one of my favorite corals, i'm not sure why. I just think they are pretty. I would like to start a collection. I was wondering if some of you guys out their could post some pics of your different blastos, either m. or w. (the large or small kind)
Thanks!

ah!!! I can't believe you got that pice! I had looked at it on ebay, and was thinking of biding. So, want to share? lol. Oh, just go under surch, and type in blastomussa. You'll find some info. Or go on google or some surch engine. You'll find lots of stuff. Its basically an easy coral to take care of, and likes medium to high lighting, with medium/low flow. hth

Blasto's in merleti or wellsi variants. My very favorite coral so I am thrilled you are asking for pics. They are very easy to care for, unassuming and quite pleasing in color to your eye.

Here are mine! Enjoy!

I have pretty high flow in my tank (20x per hour) and I just tried to put the coral in a little cove away from all the flow.

Well, there is that. I am coming into a perfect frag grow-out setup that I should have ready to "grow" in the next month, but certainly by Christmas. One of my main frag goals will be reef plugs of the five blasto merletti colors I have now. By summer, you'll want to see me at a swap. I'll have just what you are looking for. :)

Oh, I've got a couple shots to contribute. I too love the blastos! I have two b. wellsi variants, and one b meletti. I keep them in the frag tank in the low current, and under the dim 20 k. They seem happiest there, not to mention they're a whole tank away from the greedy mysis snatching jaws of my beloved porc. I spot feed everyday, so I kinda can't keep them in the same tank with Hoss.

You'll have to forgive the picture quality on a couple of these, I'm not much for photography, and the 20 K is not very conducive to digital photography.

Zepplin
10/16/2003, 11:23 AM
Its not necessary, but I think they are more likely to thrive if they are fed. You certainly don't have to do it everyday, but even when I'm busy I try to do it at least twice a week. I feed them mysis, little pieces of krill, they even consume the pellets and flakes (I mix all the food components together in a slurry for my fish).

My L.F.S. has a real nice red out green center I think i'm going to snag. thiers about 10 on a rock. what $ do these usually go for ?

pixburg-reefer
10/17/2003, 04:46 PM
well is it the large or small kind? I'd say $30, but it depends on what kind it is. I wouldn't really know. i have not seen A SINGLE lfs that has ever carried blasto. Its sad. What are they asking for?
Kelly

Python73
10/17/2003, 06:14 PM
If it is b. wellsi, you are looking at $60-100 for a softball sized piece. B. merletti tends to be only slightly cheaper. And that assumes you can find either at a store.

pixburg-reefer
10/17/2003, 06:52 PM

Two at trades, one from PSP-Monroeville, one from Wet Pets, one from Ron's Saltwater Haven. Those are the three I saw in stores in the last two years that weren't >$100.

not as many people as you think, arround here have any. Really, python is the only person that i have seen that has any. Never seen any other blastos at swaps, from any one else than him. Nor are they in the pet stores. That makes it difficult for me to try to collect them. But, its not like their real rare or anything. I don't know why we don't get them in arround here. Well, bounce to the top. Come on, still looking forward to more pics!

Hi Project Reef,

Whats a Acanasthrea, this was sold to me as a rare blast. How do I find a picture of this one you called Acanasthrea what species is it. Also if you want a closer pic I can send you one, hopefully we can Identify it.

Project Reef
12/06/2003, 03:44 AM
Hey Znut, here is a bad picture of my Acanasthrea:

http://reefcentral.com/gallery/data/500/8980AliTankAcan.JPG

The polyps do inflate a tad more. These are very similar to favia corals. They almost look like a hybrid between blasstos/favias/candycanes. Many times they are simply just called called "rare blasstos" in the trade. They are indeed rare in the hobby and therefore command a hefty price tag. It's not uncommon for small fragments consisting of a few polyp heads to sell for 150+ dollars.

Project Reef

Go to the Reef Central Homepage, then go to photo gallery, then you can upload your photos into your own personal gallery. Once you do that, left click the image, go under "properties", highlight and then copy that address. Then come to the desired thread, click post reply, hit the IMG button, and paste the that address in there. Then click submit. BOOM.

Hey Znut, Actually they don't mind high light and high flow at all. It would probably feel right at home in your 225 gallon. That picture was taken under 2 x 400 watt helios 20k bulbs (awesome bulbs and color by the way) in a tank that is only 16" tall. I am about to move the tank into a different room, the lighting is going to be 3 x 250watt double ended hqi bulbs, 2 x 20k helios de and 1 x 10k AB de. I would move the coral in the 220, just start it off on the sandbed just to be safe. Sounds like you got a killer system.

Feeding: Blastomussa is photosynthetic and does not take any known foods.

I have seen my blasto grab some brine and put it away with regularity

It was about golfball-sized when I got it. Now, its a little smaller than a baseball.

Also, I agree with Maguz, I've seen my blasto grab some daphnia and mysis.

I'll answer that for TomH - it sure is. Looking great. I just fragged it again, made 4 or 5 little frags. Hopefully by spring they should be sweet little pieces ready for trading.

Has anybody ever observed amphipods that appear to be eating blastos at night? When I first get mine, they do great and after a few days they don't expand as much until there is just white shell. Everything else in my tank is doing good except these.

Some great pics!
hope to see a few for trade at the NCPARS (if I make it next year).
I've got 2 blasto frags I p/u from a reefer in Ohio, but had to trade Echno frags to get them ("A cherry pick for a cherry pick" was the quote I remember most from that trade :D ). Worked well, shipped great, but I lost a few of the polpys trying to acclimate and position the pieces.
I've got a TON of flow in my tank, and light, and leave them on the sandbed in the middle. If it wasn't for the big tang swooshing his tail passed them on the bed, they'd be pretty stationary. Tissue is flattened against the skeleton fairly tight, but otherwise they don't seem to mind.
(Sorry, someone asked about hi-flow back on page 2 ;) ).

pixburg-reefer
12/10/2003, 08:29 PM
no, canycane coral is very different from blastomussa, well, not VERY, but, its different than the pictures you have seen. It also may be called a moon coral, but their is another coral called a moon coral, that is like a hard coral that grows in a mating form. It dosn't look "as fleshy" as the blasto's do.

Let me start by saying common names are generally garbage. But "candy cane" is generally associated with caulastrea [aka trumpet coral]. The most used common name for blasto is pineapple coral. But good luck asking for that at stores. :)

I have a 35 hex and I'm running 2 65w PC. 1-10k and the other Actinic. They do best, atleast for me, by putting them in a shaded area just out side of the light. The polyps will them extend out into the light.

I know some people have them under MH but I think they need to be in a shaded area where they're not getting any direct light but can reach out to it.

They're very senstive and will pull in if you give them to much light.

I told you I got in a prior post I got it at sea corp. The Blue is completely solid blue . The Orange/Red has a white rim and purple center it didn't come over that well in that picture but you can see it more in the attached picture.

As for Blasto being easy to take care of I don't think that the case. They're very sensitive to light and do close up very easily. Some mayn't open fully for a couple of days.

Their was a blue/gray blasto colony in a lfs around here for the first time i have ever seen. It was $60, not bad i guess, it was bigger than a soft ball. Maybe if its still their, i'll go get it.

Okay I'll try tonite, when the lights come back on. I'll have to find out how everyone posts the larger images on here to. I'm using the Nikon 4300. It was taken in the macro mode. Yes, that was a good deal on a blast that size. I paid $185 for all three of these shipping included. They are very hard to find. So if its still there go snatch it up. :)

Freed

znut reefer, to post the big pics you need to upload your pics to the internet to your own web location(?) and then you can load them to a reply or post. Click on the "post reply" tab just below this reply and then on that page you would enter your reply and click on "IMG" just above the reply box. Then you enter the address of the photo where it is loaded on the internet. To do this, just go to that picture and copy and paste the address that appears in your address bar on your web browser. I believe I am explaining this correctly. If someone can explain better, please jump on in. I had a frustrating time trying to figure it out as well. You'll have to refer to my explanation a few times to get it and then you will stumble on it and then it will be cake. Freed

You don't need your own web site, just need to upload to an internet server I think. I have Comcast cable and they allow subscribers to Comcast Internet to upload to their server up to a certain limit of bytes. You may be able to upload to your Internet Providers server if they offer that option. Other than that I would not know what to tell you. Hope this helps and I hope someone else can offer more info to help you out. Anyone? Freed

Kelly,

It has been fragged actually. At the back, the coral has grown off the rock and it's simple job to break some heads off. :D

picture the reef,

Here's bit more info. This coral has been under a variety of lighting. For the first 2.5 years it resided under 175W MH then for the next 2.5 years the lighting was 250W. More recently (the last 8 months or so in a new tank) the lighting has been 400W. The colour and expansion were possibly better under 175/250W lighting. Hopefully that will be regained when the other corals in the new tank have grown in and the Blastomussa is more shaded. I have never directly fed this or my other B wellsi.

TippyToex,

Thanks for the link. :) I still need to do a lot of work to the new site but it's getting there slowly (hopefully).

I have a couple softball sized bright red blasto Wellsi's, completely red with bright green on the inside of the mouths.

I don't have a camera but the color is prettymuch like a very red RBTA, metalic if you wana call it that.

the green are red ones are my second fav (next to the ones on the other page) the photo really doesn't do them justice, They are sooo intense green it's the first thing you see in the tank. When I try to take a photo of them I keep blowing out the colour and it looks fake.

Mine come from all over online vendors and lfs. Mostly online. I just got one from lfs for 5, but I have to save it. Pretty nice though.

I check the lfs fish stores in my area on shipment days, then drive Los Angeles maybe once every other mouths and do the same there..

http://www.zoosrus.com/photopost/data/500/11IMG_2475-med.JPG

The green one was looking terible when I got it. So bad that Anthony (aquadesingz) gave it to me for free to try to nurse it back to health. Now the green looks better than the red after the red took a dive into a Ricordia and the Ricordia won the fight. I have both Blastos in safer locations now.

This one is bleached but swells up nicely and eats mysis. I'm not sure what color it will turn out to be when it colors up. Right now its a weird transluncent orange/pink that allows the skeleton to show through.

very very nice. Dr. King, great pictures. That would be awesome if the bleached one turned orange! I have been looking for orange for so long. I found some but it was $220 for 4 polyps.
You guys have some great blastos!

Does anyone out there have a TRUE ORANGE blasto? I mean that looks like an orange? I have yet to see one...I have seen some bleached red ones sold as orange, but no true orange ones.

znut Reefer
07/10/2004, 08:28 PM
Mine are the true orange blastos, they are not bleached. I have had them for a several months. And they are doing well. The one with green centers has just put on some new growth like 3 or 4 new heads. These were sold to me as Rare Blastos.

it's hard to tell, between so many lighting combo's, and camera settings to say wether one is orange or red.. is subjective.

mane3215
07/10/2004, 08:48 PM
I mean ORANGE! Like this:

http://www.premiumaquatics.com/cherrypick/lps/630cyclo.jpg

They are orange under any lighting you put them under.

You cant see in this pic, but this guys purple center has orange stripes through the middle. I am going to try and get pics of it under actinic. I hope that they are more prominent like my "sweetness" blasto when its matures.
