I am in process of setting up a 10gal nano with a 1" drilled back glass to a sump with about 4ft head, what amount of "drain" will I get from this size opening so I know what size return pump to use??

The tank will actually drain exactly as much water as the pump returns to the tank. For a 10 gallon tank and at 4 feet of head, I think a Mag 5 pump would be a pretty good bet. They run about 50 bucks from most mail order vendors and can be used internally or externally. At four feet the pump will probably be producing around 300 gph.
