lookin for thoughts on the metal halide flood lights that home depot sells, the 175 watt and the 400 watt.

Find out the color temperature of the bulb before you buy them. The halides typically used to light reefs are between 6500 K and 20000 K. Anything below 10000 K tends to make your tank look yellowish without actinic supplementation.

I'd also question the effectiveness of the reflectors.

Also, $200 (for the 400W) isn't the greatest deal. For a little more, you can get a setup more suited for an aquarium. You can probably get a better setup for even cheaper if you look at used stuff.

Some of those home depot bulbs are a nice white .... Altho thery dont have the best refeltors.....
