I have a Schultz's or guilded pipefish that I would like to breed...I've always thought of Albert as a he...but I really don't know how to sex them...he has a yellow mark on his belly, right under the dorsal fin, which I fancy could be the mouth of his pouch (colored to attract attention)...I don't see any change in line or form...it could also be the genetals and/or anus...can any one help? or send me to an info source?...I am going to ask DocSlaw...
Thank you,
India

Hi:
I have little experience on how to truely sex these creatures. One clue however, is that they are in the seahorse family, therefore the males must have some sort of repository for the eggs. Do you see any pouch? or bald area where the eggs can be placed? This would indicate a male, otherwise...female
I would also consult Scott Micahel Book reef fish vol1. He has dedicated a whole chapter to pipefish, and it contains some of the more bizarre species. Maybe there is more insight there.
Good luck
