View Full Version : InterAmerican Tanks Ordered!!!

Greetings fellow SEASL members. Well, the big day has come where I made my bed and will soon have to lie in it. I ordered a couple of tanks from InterAmerican in Canada. Mitch has been building tanks since the 1970's and is always at least half the price as Oceanic for a glass tank. The decision to go with glass was a very tough one. The measurements on the tank are:

96x30x30 Soft Coral tank=375 gallons

60x60x30 Stony Coral tank=468 gallons

I can imagine these tanks will pretty heavy, Mitch said that 6 men should be able to carry them with ease. That remains to be seen:lol: I should be getting the tanks in about a month, give or take a week or two....Mitch is usually a few weeks off from when he tells you, as long as you are prepared for this fact, then no big deal. The main thing will be moving the tanks from the truck to the garage or basement. If anyone wants to join a tank moving party sometime in June/July, just let me know. Once I get the tanks in place, I will still have several months of waiting before water hits them. I need to install electrical, plumbing and HVAC/dehumidification modifications first, then buy pumps, skimmers, Tunze Streams and lighting.

Thanks for listening to the rant of an obsessed coral reefer! Primo Margaritas and BBQ for any and all who wish to help with moving the beasts. Now, back to OT at work to make some more dinero.

Dave

BTW, I am really looking forward to moving The Legendary Griss 200 gallon tank. Most of my corals and many other reefer's in St. Louis, originally came from George.

Actually, you forget that I am a Vioxx and Flexeril user....I've got your back covered...just take one of each pill and chase it with a brewski.

If it is before I help Griss move, then you should be fine.

But with all the stuff that I will be helping him move, I might hurt my back. :eek1:

Otherwise I am a good watcher.

I offer my services in any way that I can help. Advice I have seen in other threads range from using Playtex gloves for improved grip to getting handles that suction onto the side of the tank. What are your plans for the nano (58) after these two are up and running?

Griss,

When are you moving? If you need my help too. Put me down. Sorry about that didn't know you needed any.

Unfortunately, I'm busy all that day. Wish I could help..... What day was that?

OK, I'm in. Not sure you will even need me with the response thus far but with all these people at your place it sounds like a party.

Man, I am getting stoked! We can make it a tank moving party. I am going to check out some dollys at the moving store and those suction cups that Gary mentioned (thanks). I figure with the right equipment and enough people, that we should be able to move them down the backyard stairway.

After the tanks are moved into the house, we can chill with BBQ and for those that wish, cool off in our pool. Thanks for all the offers to help! I will take anyone I can get for this move.

Dave:)

How are you planning to get the 60" tank into the house? How wide is your doorway? That cube seems pretty large.

Nanook
06/04/2003, 09:48 PM
The cube tank is 5ftx5ftx30in, it will have to go through the backyard gate and backporch on it's side. I plan to rent a dolly or two for rolling it down the stairs somewhat and through the doorways into the basement.

It is made of 3/4" glass and will probably weigh 800lbs (guestimate). Mitch said that 6 men should be able to carry it. I think the more we have the better. Meanwhile, I will try to find some moving equipment that may make things a LOT easier.

thanks again for all the offers of help!!

So far, the list of potential movers includes:

Griss
Josh
Epon
Wonderboy
Mark
Gary
Jim
Scott
and me...I think that I can get another 3 or 4 hopefully, that will ensure that we have more than enough if everyone can't make the date.

Shannon, I am moving July 2. I plan to start moving the tank around 10 AM. I have plenty of people helping, but if you want to help and meet some of the others you are more than welcome. Man, I am going to have to buy a lot of beer, burgers and brats:)

Sorry to hijack your thread Dave.

Not likely, more likely to be that he will be in the bathroom every 10-15 minutes with GI distress...you will have to hit him on the way out with the suds.

Moving my tank next week however may be different. I might just stock up on Immodium this weekend:D

Hey all.

You can count me in too, if you need anyone else.

I'd need directions, eventually. :D

BTW, if you're moving these through a stairway, the hard part will be fitting 6 people on it with the tanks. And I hope the stairs can handle all that weight.

Good luck!

OK, the tanks are supposed to be leaving Bow Valley Aquarium in Canada tomorrow. There has been a couple of months of delays, but hopefully they are really on their way this time. Mitch has been saying they were leaving the shop for over a month now. I talked to the secretary who answers the phone to complain about an overcharge on my credit card for shipping...which she credited back to my account, she said that all the customs paperwork, etc were in order and that they would be shipping. I am having the tanks delivered to a moving company, then they have the heavy task of moving them into my home and onto the stands.

Dave

BTW, I see that I started this thread on June 3rd. Mitch told me the tanks would be ready in 3 weeks. Now it is September 16th, so that is 14 weeks. Like I said earlier in the thread, you need to take the time he tells you for delivery and multiply it by a factor of 5. I am not ready to add SW to the tanks, but I am anxious to get the tanks now that they have been done for quite a while.

When Dave gets the tank put in I think he could use a group of about 10 guys to stand there drinkin his beer and telling the install crew how they are doing the entire thing wrong. :D
