I am having quite a bit of trouble locating southdown sand and am not ready to pay LFS prices. Can anyone help me out?

Well, I just went through this myself, and after 3 Home Depots, Lowes, Toys R Us, etc. I can safely say that there is no Southdown sand in the Sacramento area. Unless someone is sitting on it and not telling anyone.
I even tried a few LFS' and heard "No", "What is that, or "That can't be good for your tank".
I ended up ordering one of the Aragonite mixes from Marine Depot. I forget what it ended up costing me per bag, but it was tolerable.
There are some other types of sand that you can substitute. Try doing a search on the forums.

I picked up some Southdown sand from Murray's friend in the East Bay.
