Announcing the “Details for the SEASL Frag Swap.

The May 2003 SEASL meeting will be May 31, 2003 from 10 AM to 1 PM at the First Baptist Church of St. Ann. The church is located at 3714 Wright Ave, St Ann MO, 63074. The link to a map is included below.

The final SEASL meeting until fall will provide an opportunity for hobbyists to trade/sell their corals, critters, and any hobby related equipment and supplies. As always, all SEASL meetings and events are open to everyone, anytime, all the time. Everyone is welcome. That means YOU!

There will be two ways in which you can participate. Each is described below.
The first trading event is called the Coral Christmas in May (CCIM) trade. This will be for corals; critters/macros/sand/supplies/equipment will be later. This trading game many people play at office Christmas parties. You can enter as many corals as you would like. You get a randomly selected numbered ticket for each coral you enter. For example, if you enter 3 corals, you will get three turns so you will take home 3 corals. Here is how the game works. Each coral will be “wrapped by the game organizers when you arrive Saturday morning and placed in the “pool (really a cooler or insulated fish box). Who ever selected ticket #1 will go first. He/she will have to select a coral from the pool. They unwrap their selection so everyone can see it. Then, the person with ticket #2 takes their turn. That person can either select a coral from the pool, or they can steal the coral selected by person #1. If they do that, person #1 selects another coral from the pool. On each turn, there can be only 2 steals, and the same coral can only be stolen once per turn.

The second way to participate is the open trade. After the CCIM trade, the meeting time will be open for individuals to trade/swap/sell any hobby related item, including corals and critters not entered in the CCIM. If you do choose to bring corals for this part of the meeting, we ask that you enter at least one coral in the CCIM event.

All participants should double bag their items to avoid leaks. We will try to have extra saltwater and bags at the meeting, but we can’t guarantee that. Remember, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

In an effort to disclose/advertise items that will be entered into the swap prior to May 31, we will utilize a posting system on SEASL’s Reef Central page. http://reefcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=169. One list will be for coral entered into the CCIM and the other post will be for items in the OPEN TRADE. Once the header posts are established, attendee’s can post information (pictures can be inserted as well) on the items they plan to enter into the swap. This type of list will allow everyone to view the list of corals available May 31st at the swap. Since the list could get lengthy, we ask that only posts listing corals and other items be listed under each category. If you wish to get more information about a specific item prior to the swap, please utilize the Private Messaging feature on Reef Central and NOT posting comments in the CCIM or OPEN TRADE lists. In addition to listing items you plan to offer for trade, you can also list coral (or other items) you are looking to trade for at the swap.
Example post:
OPEN TRADE List
Name: Jane Doe
For Trade: 1 medium colony of green star polyps
3 medium colonies of green mushrooms
1 large orange M. capricornis
2 cups of live sand
macro algae

Wanted: 1 purple M. digita
1 large Xenia
2 250W 10K MH bulbs

To keep you fueled during this event, we will be selling food and drinks. It will probably be either pizza or sub sandwiches and chips. In keeping with a developing SEASL tradition for this year, we are inviting everyone to bring a desert to share. To help support our costs for producing this event, we will also be asking for a $1 donation at the door.

We are looking for volunteers as we organize this event. Your help would be greatly appreciated. You can join in by contacting any of the three people listed below:
Gary Duke—Chairman of the SEASL Frag Swap and Chairman of the Food Committee. LuvaRiver@aol.com
Scott Johnson—Chairman of the Trading Activities GMendel2x@aol.com
Jim Craig—Chairman of the Greeting Committee. jjcraig@charter.net

Lastly, this event has the potential to be larger than anything we’ve produced in the past. Therefore, if you are planning to attend, it would be greatly appreciated if you would send an RSVP to Gary Duke at: LuvaRiver@aol.com

The final details for the May Frag Swap are coming together quickly. Check the post above for where and when.

PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT TO READ THIS UPDATE.

Planning by the Food, Greeting, and Swap committees is going very well and talk among the hobbyists indicates this event is generating a lot of interest. Remember, there will be two forums for trading as described below. I want to remind everyone that the “open trading forum will include all hobby related supplies, equipment, etc. So, bring your wish list or bring your extra supplies/equipment---or both!

We’ll have a short meeting, but the morning will be devoted to trading.

Now, the most important part of this announcement:

We will be selling pizza and soda at this event. IF YOU RSVP TO GARY AT LuvaRiver@aol.com BY THIS SUNDAY, MAY 25TH, YOU CAN BUY YOUR PIZZA AT A REDUCED RATE. Here’s the deal. For $3, you can have a 1/4 of a large pizza and soda. Those with a bigger appetite can supersize to 1/2 pizza for an extra $3. If you wait to order pizza at the event, the 1/4 pizza and soda will cost at least $5. IN YOUR RSVP, INDICATE WHETHER YOU WANT PEPPERONI, SAUSAGE, OR CHEESE PIZZA. Last but not least, what goes great with pizza (no not beer, this is a church), dessert. Anyone who is so moved, is welcome to bring a dessert to share. We have had some awesome treats at meetings this year.

If you know what corals or equipment/supplies you are planning to bring, please post them to our threads here on Reef Central .

See you on the 31st!!!!

Jim Craig

SEASL Meeting Recap

We had a great turnout for the first annual SEASL Frag Swap. 25 people signed in and we even had a couple late arrivers that we did not capture on the sign-in sheet. We were pleased to welcome seven first-timers, and we certainly missed the “regulars that could not attend.

After registration and pizza orders were taken, we began the Christmas Coral in May (CCIM) swap. This was a great deal of fun as 25 corals were randomly incorporated into the trading process. That’s when the good-hearted stealing took place. By the way, who ended up with the orange plating montipora?

Next we held a short business meeting with an abbreviated agenda.
• Store tour at Aquatic Treasures in Highland IL will be this Saturday at 6 PM. The owner is planning drawings, giveaways, snacks and more. This should be a very good time. The store is about 25 minutes from the Arch. See prior email notices and announcements on Reef Central for details. Please RSVP to Jim.Craig@charter.net ASAP.

• The group agreed to maintain the same organizational structure for the 2003/2004 SEASL season. We will elect three executive officers at the September 2003 meeting.

• We discussed programming ideas for the next season. These ideas included:
o Speakers
 Collection facilities operations, possibly Gary Thaller.
 Lighting, potential speaker to be determined.
o Videos
o Propagation workshop
o Frag Swap
o Trip to Inland
o Book shows/sharing

• The next planned meeting will be in September 2003. Barry has tentatively agreed to host the meeting. We’ll arrange details as the time gets closer.

Pizzas arrived shortly after the business meeting ended. Lunch blended into the final event for the day, the “Open Trade. While I did not get to see everything in this part of the event, I do know that aragocrete rocks, equipment, and many more corals were traded.

Thank you to everyone who participated. Special thanks to Gary who organized the entire event and chaired the Food Committee. Also, thanks to:
• Greg for helping Gary with the food arrangements,
• Scott for chairing the coral Swapping Committee and posting all the announcements on Reef Central,
• Jason for providing the Pizza at a very affordable cost and for being the official frag swap photographer,
• Tommy for helping me on the Welcome Committee,
• All those who brought desserts to pass, and
• Everyone who helped with the clean-up.

Although this was our last scheduled meeting until September, I did receive an invitation for SEASL to do a tank visit this summer. The invitation came from a friend of mine who cannot make Saturday meetings. I have seen his tank, and it is special. Stay-tuned for details as they develop.

Not sure if Gary pulled the final steal on the orange plating Monti. or if it was somebody else.

It was a very fun day and I want to add one more thanks...

Jim has done an outstanding job this year moving the group forward. Although most members only see the day of the event activities, there are many things that Jim has arranged, discussed, and/or resolved behind the scenes. He deserves much of the credit for the growth through the year.

SEASL presented Jim with a small gift to show our appreciation but he had his eye on chocolate instead (see attached).
