I bought a mushroom rock. Actually it's got all kinds of musrooms, ricordias, polyps etc on it.

In any case I've tried to set it up so the rock and critters get equal lighting from all sides. As predicted, the critters are expanding and reaching towards the light, in what I presume is a good way.

One mushroom however, is different, it has stretched very high up and the stalk looks like the middle of a fat rubber band when you stretch it tightly, i.e. it's very thin in the middle and fat at the base and the cap.

What is going on? Is it trying to split, get more light, die what?

It is reaching for light. That is normal. The mushrooms on the bottom of tank do the same thing.

with a professional, but I came home today and noticed it had severed itself from the base and moved elsewhere, not really towards the light, just in a lateral motion.

What becomes of the base?
