Hi Henry,
I don't know very much about the pipefish, but I will share the limited information that I do have. Pipefish, as you know, are closely related to the Seahorse and as in the Seahorse, very hard to keep if wild caught. They, like the WC seahorse, just doesn't adapt well to aquarium life. There is no source for captive bred pipes that I am aware of. From what I have read and the limited experiences in our seahorse group, the Alligator pipefish is probably the species that adapts best to captivity. I had a banded pipefish and he was gorgeous, but never ate in my tank that I saw. He died within 1 month. :( There is one member of our group that is keeping a Janssi pipefish with success. I have a few links to share

Hi - I have been keeping a banded pipefish for about 3 months. I got very lucky and bought one that likes to eat everything. I would not recommend taking the chance, though. We bought him on impulse to go with our Ocean Riders, got him home, and said - uh-oh, is he going to eat? We had a pod explosion right about the same time and he spent most of his time picking them off the glass and rocks. Then one day he snagged a frozen mysis shrimp and has been gobbling them ever since. He is a great fish. But again, I would not recommend them. We were just very fortunate.

I have Schultz's or the guilded pipefish...He's just wonderful...eats copepods and bbs. I hope to find a mate and breed him.
