Hi guys:

I'm in the process of setting up my 5 gallon. It's going to be a softie tank.

The lighting i'm looking at is the JBJ "clamp on" 36 watt fixture that comes with a 50/50 (10,000k white, 7100k actinic) bulb. I can get it for $70 (shipping included) off line.

I know this is enough lighting, question is... am I getting a good deal on the price? I think it's a good deal considering the mini might by coralife is about the same price offline.

What do you think?

I'm using a 65w LOA fixture on my 10 gallon tank, cost $25 at Wally World. That fixture would probably work for you too, but I'm obviously a tightwad. Plus, there's no actinic, just don't tell my corals ;) .

I'm using a 32 watt compact 10000k and super actinic combo smartlamp from custom sea life I ordered through Champion lighting for around 40 bucks. At the time, I think they were just about to raise the price 10 bucks. It grows sps just fine.

Do you have a site for Wally World? I'm intrested in this fixture but can't find a site anywhere.

I don't think tightwad so much as "smart shopper" :D

I use a mini might and it $60 - I have flower anemones, sexy shrimp, procelain crab all doing great!

Well here's a place where I've gotten my lighting cheaper than if I got the parts and made them myself. I recently bought the dual 65 watt PC for like 118$$ shipped and this was with the two smartlamps with it.

You said you were going to have a softy tank and the lowest wattage I could find was a 65 watt and 2 feet long, but here's the link I encourage everybody to take a look at the prices at this place, they're unreal.

Danielle,

I picked up the exact same JBJ 36W fixture for $36.00 (including shipping) off of eBay. It was brand new and still in the box.

Danielle,

Sorry :o , the light is at WalMart. It's a Lights Of America 65w Shoplight. Do a search here for Lights of America or LOA, there's a ton of info here. Basically it's a pc fixure with a 6500k color temp bulb. Sounds like Chad found a good deal too.

What are the dimensions of your tank? My 5 1/2 is 16 x8 (top). The lights are a pair of 15w NO fixtures. These fixtures are 18-19 inches long so they hang over the sides of the tank. The 24 inch model in the link would hang over a small tank even more. How big is the JBJ "clamp on" 36w? Using a clamp on versus some type of hood will help with heat buildup but also increase your evaporation.
My 5 1/2 is in the "I don't care how it looks as long as the corals are happy" category. The LOA fixture is king of that jungle. It is an inexpensive solution to your lighting needs. The major drawback is that the fixtures are not "pretty" . Are you building a tank for the living room or one for the basement?

I don't have mine right in front of me, but if I remember correctly, it's about 10" long.

does jbj have a website?? If not, what does a 48w unit run? Thanks

Yes JBJ does have a website www.jbjlighting.com

They don't sell to the public directly but, they do have a section on their website for retailers that carry their lighting.

The 36w "clamp on" is 19" long. This style of lighting would just eliminate alot of problems for me. Thats why i'm seriously looking at it.

I'm still keeping my options open though. Anymore ideas keep'em coming.:D
