I was at the LFS today and saw the new oceanic 30 gallon cube. 18 x18 x 18, cool looking little tank. Anyone set one of these up? I am really trying to figure out where I would put it if I bought it, and how to convince my wife I "need" another tank :D

How much were they asking, I was thinking about setting up a cube for my next tank.

they were asking 88 for the tank, glass canopy and strip light.
cherry or light oak trim.

Just wondering if anyone has bought one of these Oceanic 30gal. cubes. How much did they pay for it and how do they like it. Thanks.

I will most likly pick one up this week, I will post a picture of it if you would like.

Yes! Please post pics.:) Are you buying the tank w/stand or just tank? My bro-in-law is coming from midwest this month and can build me a nice looking stand if I just settle for the tank. Hopefully the stores here in southern cali. will be carrying those cubes soon.

Sounds like a good tank for seahorses. Perhaps your wife likes seahorses?

geo
03/02/2003, 06:45 PM
I may just sneak it in and use the "that old thing, I have had that forever..."
I piicked up a 150 watt DE set up for it at the frag swap yesterday

only 88bucks...dang!!!

hmm, is this a normally made tank by oceanic now??

Lunchbucket

geo
03/02/2003, 10:26 PM
I would guess its a new tank, the store had information stating only available here. I kind of figured other areas would have the same deal. being 30 gallons I wasn't sure if it would be a nano tank, but it is small and I know the post would be quickly buried in the other forums. I think 88 is a great price for the tank, oceanic builds some nice stuff ;) How are you guys using the DE bulbs shielding the light? a wood canopy and the oceanic glass cover good enough?

dang for 88bucks i want one!!!!

Yo, Lunchbucket:

I'm going to look into a pair of these as my "bookend" tanks for the 65 gal: would fit a lot better than the 20" wide 10 gal stands. Bigger footrpint= more clams!

Thanks for the heads-up guys.

Ken

Actually: just did a calculation:
18x18x18= 25.25 gal
19x19x19=29.69 gal

heading to the oceanic site now

Just got an e-mail reply from Oceanic. The tank measures 20.5" x 18.5" x 21.5". I'm planning on lighting with a single metal halide pendant. Would a 150 hqi be enough or should I go with 250? Or maybe a single 175 bell pendant?

Figgy
03/03/2003, 05:04 PM
Well I have a smaller cube tank. Mine is 16x16x16in. But the bestspot for it is in a corner facing out diagnally 45 degrees from the corner if that makes sense. The only downfall to that is it is hard to get to the skimmer and make sure everything is O.K. Put it in your bedroom if you don't have a tank in there now. You got away cheap for your tank.

Lunchbucket
03/03/2003, 05:29 PM
anyone know if you can get them anywhere? like any oceanic dealer??

Lunchbucket

J-Bass

Yeah, any Oceanic dealer can special order if they don't have it in stock.

kennerd
03/03/2003, 07:30 PM
So, it has a footprint of 20.5x18.5 and is 21.5 tall?

I have my 65 gal set up in an alcove, and there is 22.5" to either side, and I want a tank on either side of it. Heck set in there with the 18.5 width would be great: a little bit more room bewtween tanks to clean salt creep.

I'd probably go with the 250, and either go with a radium like Lunchbucket's or a pendant with actinics. When thinking through the side tanks, I was going to order 2 12 gal tanks which are 20x10 & 14" high and was going to run a 175 +2x32PC over one and a plain 175 over the fuge. I have a 2x175 ballast already and would upgrade the main lights to 2x250. Just need to figure if that much lighting (850MH, 190 VHO and 64 PC=1,104watts) might cause some heat prpblems!:D

I have a 7 gal cube as well in my wife's home office. Cool tank.

geo
03/03/2003, 07:32 PM
must be, like the same width of a 75

i have one of oceanic's 60 cubes. 24". I love it. BTW, 18" cube is hardly 30 gallons...actually 25gallons. Just something to keep in mind.

kennerd
03/04/2003, 10:31 AM
According to those dimensions: 20.5x21.5x18.5= 35.30 gal, but I'll assume that's an outer measurement. Assuming a pretty normal internal measure of 20x21x18=32.73.

J-Bass, that is an Oceanic 37 gallon SHOW. :) Nice tanks. I ordered one. Should have it Wed.

Oh and if you want to know the dimensions on Oceanics tanks, all you have to do is go to their site: http://www.oceanicsystems.com/products_dimensions.html

geo

This tank is different from the 37, if that's what those measurements are referring to. I am still trying to figure out how to finagle my way into one, the whole wife thing you know.....

Well this is the response I got from Oceanic:

Thank you for the e-mail. The 30 gallon cube has only been shipping for
a few weeks now. I am not sure what stores have them in stock, but they
can special order them. The 30 gallon cube measures 20 1/2 x 18 1/2 x
21 1/2.

Thank you,

The 37 is 24.5" long, not 20.5". These tanks are similar but the 30 cube is not as long.

Exceprt from my email from Oceanic customer svc:

The length is 20 1/2, the width is 18 1/2, and the height is 21 1/2. This stand can only be made with the door on the front. We can make the aquarium Reef Ready as a custom order. To purchase Oceanic custom products, or to get pricing, please contact an Oceanic dealer and have them contact our custom department.

This won't work from where I have to squeeze my two "auxilliary" tanks.

I already emailed Chrsitian @ wetdryfilter.com to see how much it would cost to get a RR 16" or 18" cube & stands.

Keep y'all posted.

Gorgeous tanks. LFS had 2 in, one with walnut and one with maple finish. 280 was what they were asking for tank, stand, glass top and light strip. I'm thinking if you could get them with a small overflow and hang a single halide over it you'd have an awesome reef tank.

J-Bass

My LFS has them in too. I'd prefer the stand with a wood door than the tinted glass though.

cube tank FS on RC (http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=160655)

Here's one for sale here on RC, similar proportions, so you can see in his pics what a pendant would look like over these.

I wasnt crazy about that stand, looks like a stereo thing. It would probably look nice in the right situation tho.

J-Bass
03/07/2003, 03:01 PM
Yeah, not to keen on their stand but I read their warranty on their site and it's only valid if their tanks are used with their stands or an Oceanic approved stand. Hopefully I can find a decent deal for the tank/stand. Most of the local Oceanic dealers in my area are kinda shady and lookin' to rip you off.

I'm still bouncing the ideas around with him, and have to make some decisions. Here's what the setup will look like:

http://home.earthlink.net/~obrienken/_uimages/twincube1.JPG

You can see an AGA 20" wide stand to the right of the 65 gal tank. I have these leather seating cubes in the fish room, and discovered that they are 17" cubed, so I just set it on top of the stand for scale. Whatcha think?

http://home.earthlink.net/~obrienken/_uimages/twincube2.JPG

Left side has the same amount of space and will host the same sized tank: one for a fuge and a second for clams/frags. I plan on halide pendants for at least the frag/clam side.

kennerd

I've got the Oceanic 37 Reef Ready with a Giesemann 250W Nova II pendant. It rocks and you'll need a chiller. I run a quarter horse Power Cooler to ensure homeostasis. Without the chiller my temp was out of control, even with the light 15 inches from the surface.

Being in the frozen tubdra, why not crack a window??;) Kinda surprised that you've got that much heat problem with that kind of height and wattage.

Guys: I'm going to hold off on the pair of tanks: logistics became a PITA. WIll most likely look at the oceanic cube in question here or a 54gal corner, halide pendant for the frag/clam tank....

God, the wife is going to kill me: maybe I can work it out with a local to buy it through and then tell my wife you gave it to me for a few frags or something. Like she wouldn't see right through THAT!

hehe: Yeah, hon, you know Lunchbucket, right? Sure..the guy with the acrylic refugium and stuff: pretty weird. i ran into him at the Quickie Mart the other day, and were like holy crap man, what are you doing all the way in NY? He was cruising the area with this tank to sell, and figured that there are more people in our area that are reefers than out by him, and he was just looking up our phone # at the payphone, so I traded him for a roll of Garden State Parkway tokens, a dozen chocolate donuts and I filled his gas tank, and Bam, we put the tnak in my truck and that's EXACTLY how it happened! Weird, huh?

I'd pay for that FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!

I was considering contacting Andy (I think that's the feller's name that makes them) for one without the built-in filtration for my fuge, but I'm waiting to hear back from Christian @ wetdryfilter.com about a 24x24x16 clam lagoon tank and a 16" cube for the fuge instead.

Where did you find the 30 for 88 bucks. I am in atlanta and the least I have seen is 129 at of all places petsmart. The LFS are upwords of 220.

Another question, are you drilling the back?

good question about the drilling. I just saw one today, also at petsmart.

disclaimer; the only reason I would ever be caught in a petsmart was to look for salt. they routinely have buckets of salt for under 40$.

I'm curious, b/c the tank was oceanic, if the glass is all plate, and not tempered. Its a little deeper than I'd like, but I'm looking for another tank for a 'spare' 175w halide. I'm upgrading my 40br to a 400w for more even light distribution--I've got 24" of BRIGHT placement for my sps, and not much on the sides. Lots of erroneous info.

If you drill or know anyone who's drilled the 30 cube oceanics, let me know. thanks.

I made my own 30 gallon cube with some 1/4" plate glass I found in the basement (19" square sheets). Even if I bought the glass now, Im sure it would be under $50 for all the glass...and then you get the nice open glass top look...excellent for a pendant (no plastic to obstruct the view, or melt).

I am going to have the 30 drilled in the back, approx. 3 inches from the top and 3 inches form the left side (looking from the front) much as I did for my 15. (At least that is the plan at the moment.)

For all those interested. I have two of the 30gal cubes. I love them (except for the stand). Most homes do not have a lot of lateral space (wide) so cube tanks better (more water per foot).
I live in Calif. (earthquake country) and the stands are a little wobbly (only 3 sides are wood) but seems OK. So far both tanks are used for fresh and I use the 20inch power compact by coralife. Not quite fit but very close (lights 1/2inch too short). I use these for plants. Will be getting the 37gal for a reef soon. Yes they are cool--with all that depth I plan on have live rock on 3 sides and have an amphetheater effect.---JMO. Good luck to all that is getting one. PS. Bought mind from petsmart.

Thx. I had a little bit of trouble with the Royal Gramma picking on the Pseudochromis at first in my 10-gallon. The bad part is that I couldn't catch the Royal Gramma or the Pseudochromis to remove them from the tank and put them in another one. I ended up turning out the lights for a couple of days to stop the fighting. On the third day when I turned the lights back on, they don't mess with each other and haven't since. Same thing in the 37-gallon. They swim by each other all the time without so much as a glance at each other now. Needless to say, if anyone wants to have both of these fish, I would highly recommend adding them at the same time.
