I just set up a 10 gallon micro tank, a few months ago, and i want to get an idea of what your tanks look like. I would also like to get something better than double bulb floresent, and sugestions?

Hi and welcome to the nano club...I also have a 10 gallon that has almost been set up for a year now. Unfortunately I don't have any good full tank shots but I have some decent close up shots on my website. In terms of lighting, there are several different directions to go, all depending on what you plan to do with your tank. If you want to do Acropora I would reccomend at least a 150W metal halide. If you want to do montipora or LPS you could do Power Compact lighting. There are some good deals now on cheap PC lighting and they are a bit cheaper than the Metal Halides. Here is a pic of my tank.

Old pics of mine: both tanks have 2x32 PC's in these pics:

the 10 gal:

http://home.earthlink.net/~obrienken/_uimages/10galnano.jpg

and my 12 gal (same footprint as the 10, but 2" taller)

http://home.earthlink.net/~obrienken/_uimages/12galnano..jpg

the 12 is empty except for the sand bed and the 10 is now a prop tank with 3x32w PC's. Currently, both use Ecosystem 40 Hang-on Refugia as the sole means of filtration.

I have had very good luck with 2x32PC's and montipora:

Here's a current pic of the pink monti from the 10 gal pic above, next to the coral banded shrimp: This is the growth after about 8 months, and after fragging 5 times.http://home.earthlink.net/~obrienken/_uimages/pnikmonti_flash.JPG

You can see how this one is plated well, and then sends up spikes.

As far as acros: I have had some frags under the lower lighting, with boring coloration and extremely slow growth: after moving them to the 65 gal with 4x96 PC's there has been 10x increase int he amount of growth (in comparison) and better coloration. Once the halides go on, I expect even better of both.

I have a 55wPC I think its to little light for Acropora but is more than enough for soft corals. Check out my web page its in my profile. Go to the photos section for my tank pics.

I have a 10 gal flat back hex 2 32w pc, ac150( used as a CA reactor) about 4lbs of sand, 11lb of lr, 1 cleaner, 2 turbos, 1 firefish and some small mushrooms that some one gave me.....
Its only been up for 6 weeks--so there will be more added too it soon (after I get paid :) )

A cheap fix would be the screw in pc's. I have a 10 with 2 of them over it you can see in my gallery pic's (cheap digital camera). These are made by all-glass and are 10 watts that put out equivalent of 50w at 6500 color temp . They look great and since this is an expiremental tank I thought I'd try it. This tank has been set up for about 4 months. You won't see the growth as with 2x32w pc with a 10k and an actinic for example but they are about 10-13 bucks each. I also found some brighter ones at Home Depot for 8 dollars each. They are labeled daylight and on the back they say 6500k. If it doesn't say that on the back don't get them. Most of the screw in pc's are 3000-4000k and you don't want these. Good luck

I used 2-36w PCs on my 10g back then and soft corals were blooming. It put out a very nice output but then again, I had the urge to upgrade to 175w MH later on when I upgraded to a 15g tank.

Here's pic of tank with the DIY gravity fed refugium for it:

And a front/side closeup view of tank:

My clams did pretty well under the lighting.

That's very slick light hangong! I never thought of using light diffuser to "stand" the lighting. I like it. :)

BTW, how do you post a pic without it being an attachment that you have to click on like mine is?

Thanx

Nice looking tank MacnReef! Any more pics? To post a picture you need to have it uploaded to a website. In the post options you will see a button labeled IMG, just click on that and post the link to the uploaded picture and it should show up on your post.
