Hi folks, I'm planning to set up my first 5 gallon or so nano tank but would like some input on my two choices for lighting. I've read that some nano reefers are using the ushio or AB double ended HQI 70 watt MH with good results. I know that MH looks good as it tends to replicate sunlight, and that light loving animals tend to do well with this light. My other option is compact lighting.

While still yet in my planning stage, I would like to first at least get my live rocks to propagate with lots of coraline algae. While at the beach, I noticed that some coraline algae was on the bottom and side of the rocks that were not really exposed to bright sunlight. This would seem that not all coraline algae needs intense lighting? So I figured that compacts would fit the job here especially if I keep softees and mushrooms. But then again, the 70 watt MH looks so natural. Thanks...:)

I dont see a problem. I have a small 7 gal nano with a 70 watt HQI bulb over it. No problems with heat and the fish and anemones are doing great.

Thanks carlos. Do you have much coraline on your live rocks? if so what color is it? light or deep purple/pink?
