Shaving brush turning white???

Last evening I purchsed 5 stalks of penicillus dumetosus (shaving brush algae) from my lfs. I've eyed it there for about 2 weeks and it was green as grass. I put the 5 stalks in my refugium last night and now tonight they are almost completely white. What happened?

They are calcium based and basically breaking down. Just like the mermaid fans... tough to keep

I had them for quite a while. They would die off and then months later spring up again. Don't throw the root away. It just might do that. I really loved when it was around. I saw some yesterday at the LFS but it was like 12$ for a piece. I thought that was high.
