I purchased a large hammer coral (about the sise of a mini basketball cut in half) a little over a week ago and it had some tissue damage at the edge of the skeleton. I was wondering if you might know of any ways to help this coral recover it tissue? Also if you happen to know what the best food for hammer corals is?
Thank You for your time

Hi KCP,

It will heal up and regrow over the area provided all other conditions are good.

Hammer coral foods appear to be variable. Try diced fish or diced crustaceans or (thawed) frozen plankton or krill. Whatever sticks to the tentacles is worth another try.

Often it helps to shut down current over the animal for about an hour when you try to feed. This may stimulate the animal in some regard.

Finally, try a search in the Reef Central archives on hammer corals and feeding to see what other folks have to say.

Good luck!
