View Full Version : Drilling a tank

Does anyone have a 1-3/4" carbide tipped hole saw that I can borrow to drill a tank? I want to install a 1" bulkhead.

Alternately, what local glass company will drill the tank for me?

Thanks

Give Reef Systems (old Tropics) a call. Last time I was talking to the owner he said he would drill a tank. You could also try Beldts but they seem to take a while to get around to it.

Thanks,
Brad

You could also try Saltwater City. I walked in last fall with a 20 gal and Daryl drilled on the spot for me. I think he charged me $10. It couldn't have been easier.

Reef Systems is $20 per hole and Saltwater City is $10. Both prices do not include bulkhead and other plumbing parts. Finally, these are quotes for drilling the side of the tank only.

Thanks for the replies. I just dropped the tank off at SWC.

Hi John,

I guess everyone has changed their prices! :D

I had my tank done for like $12/hole at Tropics b/c SWC was going to charge $25/hole! Consequently I walked out with a bunch of extra stuff, so it paid off for them.

Maybe I should have taken you up on your offer Griss. Now I have a crack in the tank. SWC said it was there already. I did not notice a crack before I dropped it off to be drilled...
The tank had 2 holes for 1/2" bulkheads already drilled, I want 1" bulkheads. It's a little risky re-drilling a tank.
The crack goes from the hole to the top. So I was thinking it wouldn't be a problem as far a leaks are concerned. But, I messed with it for a couple hours last night and can't seem to stop a leak at the bulkhead. Maybe I can silicone the bulkhead in?

Anyway, thanks for your generous offer :D

John,

Placing a little silicone of the seal of the bulkhead should fix the problem.

What about grabbing some plexiglass, drilling a hole the size of the other hole. And then siliconing it to the glass? You can use the bulkhead to sanwich the two together & form a permanent seal?

Was this on your 135? Or your sump?

Sorry to hear about your tank. Were they trying to drill the larger holes in the same place as the smaller ones, basically using them as a center? This would put stress on the weakest area of your tank, the area between the hole and the nearest edge. It might have been better to have plugged the small holes and started fresh with the larger ones, if that was the case. Hindsight is 20/20.
As for the silicone, if a little doesn't work, try a lot! Finally, if you have any BigGulp cups, I have this idea...

Dela,
It is a 40g breeder tank. I am going to expand my refugium and maybe add an area for propgation?
I got to keep up with you guys.
