Is it possible to have too much filtration?
I set up my reef tank about a year ago and everything has done extremely well for a beginner. When I set it up I got 2 unused penguin bio-wheel filters from a friend so I went ahead and used both of them on my 55 gal. tank. I also went a little cheap on the skimmer and bought a seaclone skimmer,(being a novice I'm not sure how efficient it really is), it seems to be doing ok though.
What I'm wondering now is with the bacteria established for a year now are the penguins still needed(by the way I have about 55-60 lbs. of live rock and 2-3" sand bed), and I'm also considering a better skimmer, any suggestions?

Depends on your setup. If you have LR and LR you probaly have enogh for a biofilter. Take out the biowheels. If your skimmer skims and you have low nitrates and no or little hair alga it maybe enough. If not get a remora

I concur with Iron.

However, I won't endorse any filter by name. :D
