Last time I checked, anoxic meant without oxygen. In the 2/2001 FAMA "Sand Mail", anoxia is suddenly defined (by a mysterious biochemist whose name is not revealed) as being a state of low oxygen tension (rather than essentially no oxygen tension) in which anoxic denitrifying bacteria live. From my training, I would define this as being hypoxic and term these as facultative anaerobes.

Am I confused here or is the author?

I think that at best, I would describe the author as being sloppy, and that you are correct.

There are lot of terms that are being used in those kinds of discussion. Aerobic, subaerobic, anaerobic, oxic, suboxic, and anoxic... :D.

"Ya need a program to tell the players.." :D

Try to see what the author means, but if s/he doesn't define the terms - well, I ignore such articles.
