adding sand

If I'm going to add some more live sand(pardon me if this is a stupid question) do I just put it on top of my existing sand bed and will critters eventually "mix" it up?

Yup.

Add no more than about 1 cm (roughly 1/2 inch) at a time, and the critters will 1) not be harmed and 2) will move up through it and over time mix it in.
