My 5 1/2 gallon nano shares the same sump & refugium as my 20 long. The 5 1/2 has two holes drilled in the back allowing for redundant overflows leading to a 10g sump. A small powerhead in the sump pushes water back into the nano by way of rubber tubing and a pvc spraybar.
When the tank is drilled the process is much simpler than when you must rely on syphons or other overflow devices that either take up too much room in a nano or require too high a flow to operate efficiently.

I have a 30g tank and would like to have a sump or a refugium. Don't really know much in this field but how could i get the water from the tank to sump and from sump to tank without having to get my tank drilled and pretty cheaply? Also whats the dif between refugium and sump?

Thanx
:)

A sump is a container attached to the main tank. It may be another tank, a rubbermade type tub, or most anything that can safely hold water. It gives you a place to put your equipment (heater, skimmer, etc) and also increases the total water volume in your system (more water = more stability).
A refugium is also a container attached to the main tank. The same tanks and tubs that work for a sump will also work for a refugium. By definition, a refugium is a place where small pods can grow without predators. They usually contain macro algae, rocks, sand, and perhaps a snail or two. In contrast to the sump, a refugium will require its own light. The growing algae removes nitrates from the water and harvesting the algae removes them from your system.
Depending on your space and your budget you may need to combine both a sump and a refugium in the same container. This is accomplished by dividing your container into sections.
I hesitate to go into too much detail because every setup is different and I don't know your space limitations. Without drilling your tank you will need to rely on an overflow and the good ones are not cheap. If you have room to place the refugium higher than the main tank you have some options there. Is this possible for your situation?

Thanx for the reply and yes it would be possible to stick about a 5 gallon tank above the main one.

Thanx again for the info:)

This is a sump I set up to go with my minibow I had drilled. More info on the sump and it's construction can be found here. (http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6383)
The drilled minibow....

If you wanted to set up something overhead it can be done really easily. I used a KritterKeeper plastic tank over my 5.5 gallon. Have a MiniJet sitting in a Penguin Mini HOB feeding it and just let gravity dump it back into the display.

Little more info on this setup here. (http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2260)

Thought maybe this might give you some ideas or help Sclero and Soccer.... good luck with your projects and post some pics when you're done... love them piccies!,hehehe

sorry to jump in here but i've been having problems with my refugium and i finally just unhooked it cuz i couln't get the water levels right, something was always overflowing. why is it better to have the fuge over the tank? how does this avoid the overflow problems? also drilling is not an option for me so what plumbing advice do you all have for a below tank fuge?

what was your problem? having 2 pumps (one into the refuge and one out not matching right?)

if you have a fuge above tank then critters can gavity feed back to the tank and not get "chopped" up in a pump as some say they do

if you have one below tank just tee off your drain of your tank add a ballvalve to slow the flow and have it gravity feed to your sump

NICE!!!:eek1: That is a nice clean looking setup....I am now wanting to do the same thing....but I have a 20 gal bowfront that I will be useing. Could I bother you for some close up shots of the two tanks (sump and mini bow)?? How is that mini chiller working out and how are you running it??? Did you just set it to come on with the lights and just have the heater set to come on if it is needed??

Where did you get the lighting from? Also, where did you get that stand? Who drilled your mini bow? Could I do a smilar thing with a 10g bow front acrylic tank?

NoLac,
Some more info & pics on the whole setup can be found here (http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7216) , and here (http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6708) ,and finally here (http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6383) ....hehehe As far as the chiller goes... I have it hooked up to a Ranco single-stage controller. Tank is set on 78, and so far the temp with light on has not exceeded 79, chiller is set to kick on at 80. Mind you it's full on winter in Chicago and the house is like at 70.

Mac,
The lighting is an empty hood that I ordered from Bruce at Pet Supply Liquidators and then retro'd my 150 DE into...Um the stand is from IKEA, the "Omar" to be exact, available in the "chromed" version or the tasteful black...hehehe
Tank I got drilled by a local glass shop, nice guys and only 5 bucks a hole! And an emphatic YES you could so the same thing with your tank...why not!? You can easily drill the tank with just standard hole saws meant for wood, I'd be all over that!...lol

What is IKEA, I did a search and found nothing, where did you get it?
