next week i am taking a vacation in st. thomas (us virgin islands). i have never been there and was wondering the following:

1) can i collect anything worthwhile (is it permissible?)
2) can i buy anything worthwhile

or if anybody has any good suggestions ...of course i will snorkel .....

No and no.

That said, my favorite snorkel spot is actually on St John. Take the ferry out of Red Hook to Cruz Bay. From Cruz Bay take a park jitney to the old sugar mill at Annaberg. Get off the jitney at the bottom of the hill below Annaberg and walk the gravel road along the beach until you see a very small island close to the shore (Leinster bay). Swim out and around that island, it's covered in coral.

Take a picnic lunch, don't take valuables, and don't pet the donkeys.
