Dr Ron,
I turned a flashlight onto my tank last night and saw this fella crawling around my tank. He looks like an urchin but i can't really tell what kind. Hopefully you can shed some light on this and let me know whether he is reefsafe or not. Also tell me what benefit do i get out of leaving him in there. If he eats only coralline, then i will probably want him out since i want to grow coralline. I jut added some small pieces of cured LR into my tank a couple days ago and i suspect this is where he came from. Should i remove him? He is purple in color. Thanks for your help.

Sand,

It is an individual of a species of Echinometra probably the Caribbean Echinometra viridis. It will eat mostly non-coralline algae, but may graze occasionally on coralline (almost all urchins do). I wouldn't consider it a problem.
