Hi Ron,
I recently purchased these snails from Premium Aquatics. It was my understanding that these are Neritidae Nerita funiculata, as originally posted by PA. Now PA is listing them as Margarites pupillius, yet these are the same snails. Have they been reclassified? I can find little information within the various aquarium related books, and even less information online. Can you point me towards some good links?

Thank you for making yourself available to us, at Reef Central. Very much appreciated!

Hi,

They are a nerite, whether they are Nerita funiculatais open to question.

There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that they could be Margarites pupillius. This is a cold-water, temperate to boreal or sub-arctic species found in the North Pacific.
This species would die immediately upon encountering a temperature warmer than about 50 deg. F.

You might ask the folks at PA to contact me if they want their snails identified. :D

Sounds like they need some help....

Hi Ron,

I would love to send you some of our snails for ID. We list the species name that our suppliers gives us, so sounds like they are not correct.

So if you want us to send you some samples let me know.

thanks

jason
