I want to get my friend a nano tank to get him started in the hobby. I dont know which one to get. The aquapod, biocube, jbj. I know he wants one with a built-in skimmer because he likes that clean look. I have ~$200 to spend. Will be keeping zoanthids (his favs) some softies and some LPS.

I have a AquaPod & a NanoCube both are great, If u want the clean look go with the BioCube. Also the BioCube stand is better than the AquaPod & NanoCube stand

does the nanocube have a protein skimmer built in?

go with a finnex tank, they have a few different sizes but they are the best. i have a 30 gallon which hides all the equiptment, its the same idea of the biocube and what not but the plus is is that it comes with a nice skimmer and a fuge w/light all built in.

The Finnex tanks are nice, but it will probably blow the $200 budget. How much wiggle room is there with that?

I have an AquaPod, and I'm very happy. If you DIY a stand (fun project for you and your buddy), you can save yourself some coin and get around the stand issue.

What size are you looking at? Is $200 the budget for just the setup alone, or for tank/stand/rock, etc. Here's a link to Dr Foster's : http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=13976&Nty=1&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=All&N=2004&Ntt=aquapod&Np=1 . They have the 24g Aquapod with PC's for <200 w/ shipping.

I have $200 aside just for the tank alone. He already has a stand. Where can I find the Finnex tanks? I think it is noteworthy to mention I live in Toronto.

finnex.net has the Finnex products. Since you're in Toronto, have you talked to Will at Aquarium Obsessed to see if he can build you something custom? You'd probably have no shipping costs. He has a forum on here, as a sponsor.

I have been very happy with my 14g biocube. With the 48w lighting i have been able to keep pretty much anything except SPS's.
IMO a skimmer is not neccesary fo a nano tank .Weekly water changes are sufficient. Mine has been running for a year without one.

I have a 12g jbj and 24g jbj. I love them and find them easy to maintain. Don't worry about the skimmer unless you want to pay--just do the small weekly water changes. For the 12 g, you are talking 1-2 gallons per week. Otherwise you simply scrape the glass and replace the filter floss every week or two, and handle the evaporation. I've been doing it ~ 18 months. There are better systems, but you'll pay. If you go jbj, make sure to get the deluxe models for the better lighting.

cube master from oceanproaquatics.com the 24g is not on the site but you can call and phone order if they have them in stock. They are a big bang for the buck: thicker glass, T5 lights, moon led, ect. it night have the skimmer also. I have the 12g and its great.

I really like that tank but shipping is going to be too much for the tank. I dont want it broken when it arrives.

I'd say best bet is JBJ Nano-cube deluxe or Biocube - pretty much anything in the 12 - 16 gallon range is under $200. What I really think you should be asking is who has stuff on sale for the holidays right now. :D

I like my JBJ Nano. I currently have the 24g. But, I am going to probably upgrade soon to the 29 HQI.
