Could I use a 70w halide on a 5 gallon? Or would it heat it up too much?

You will most likely need to add something else in the form of temp control for a 5g. Maybe one of those little azoo fan units (but keep in mind you will most likely also want a ATO to keep up with the evaporation)

you could try an old computer fan its a cheap easy cooling fan

Or maybe I could keep my apartment at 65 degrees? LOL.

Ya, its going to evaporate alot... but fan is probably the way to go.

i still dont understand why you would really need MH lights for a 5 gallon.....ive seen great 5 gallon tanks under PCs

I have the 70 Watt sunpod on top of my 5.5 and do not have heat issues. I have it with just the standard legs that came with the light and an open top on the tank. Granted it has a built in fan and I also keep the ceiling fan on in the room it is in 24/7. The highest the tank ever got to was 85 when the fan in the room was accidentally turned off. I say go for it, but you will need an auto top off which I have also.
