Red Sea Max Water Levels

Has anyone had much luck in rising the water level in the pump compartment by cutting the black foam media in half and only using half?? I'm so sick of micro air bubbles blowing out the pumps. It doesn't seem to matter how much water you add the pumps are removing it faster than it is being replenished. It would be nice to have a clear tank for a change. (Note the pump that seems to release most of the air I have the output pointed up towards the surface) Any suggestions?? I'm also going to try and reach a red sea max rep

There's a "drop the pump mod" from MBdave that is supposed to work. I'm trying it today, as I've tried all kinds of stuff without any real success, replacement skimmer and pumps didn't help. I've tried taking all media out of the back and still got bubbles.
